“Powering Pittsburgh's Economy Through Energy.” I recently had the privilege of joining industry leaders Kevin Walker from Duquesne Light Company, Jacques Besnainou from Westinghouse and Alan Shepard from CNX Resources in a vital discussion moderated by Stefani Pashman of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Our conversation centered on topic facing our region that is equal parts challenge and opportunity: ensuring reliable, affordable, and increasingly sustainable energy for Pennsylvania’s future. The electricity grid where Pittsburgh and other major cities draw their energy (the PJM) faces a potential 40 GW shortfall by 2030, which would result in tangible impacts to the region. This presents a significant challenge, but within this challenge lies tremendous opportunity. Specifically for our region to emerge as a leader both in energy production and transmission, as well as in high-energy-demand sectors like manufacturing and AI. I continually champion the U.S. as an attractive region for investment for critical industries and innovative businesses, like Covestro. One of America's strategic advantages has always been accessible and affordable energy compared to other global markets. As we strengthen our energy position locally, Pittsburgh and the region can become not only a beacon for growth in the U.S., but globally. I believe in an all-of-the-above energy approach that balances immediate needs for baseload power with our long-term sustainability commitments. This is about a smart transition that maintains industrial competitiveness while advancing environmental goals. Covestro is committed to this balanced path. We're working toward climate neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035, and we’re already making strides, with four of our U.S. sites running on renewable electricity. This includes our Pittsburgh headquarters. Pittsburgh stands at a pivotal moment. With thoughtful policy, like that being championed by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, infrastructure investment, and collaboration across the energy value chain, we can transform today's challenges into tomorrow's competitive advantage, and in doing so, create a resilient energy landscape that powers economic growth while advancing our climate goals. The NERC Board of Trustees has accepted the 2025 ERO Reliability Risk Priorities Report, developed by the Reliability Issues Steering Committee. The report provides forward-looking guidance on the most pressing risks to the bulk power system, informed by the 2025 Reliability Leadership Summit and industry feedback. - The 2025 critical reliability risk themes are: - New large loads plus changing resource mix - Larger-scale widespread events observed - Natural gas interdependence - Cyber and Physical Security complexity - Persistent supply chain challenges - Volatile energy policy NERC urges industry and policymakers to act now: modernize reliability frameworks, strengthen mitigation and recovery strategies, and ensure reliability is central to energy policy. New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, announced that it has installed Carbon Reform’s carbon reduction system to help advance its building decarbonization efforts. This week, Scott O'Brien, Director of Global Process Engineering, presented on “Profiting in the Circular Economy” at Mining PA, hosted by Penn State University. His presentation focused on how a circular economy transforms growing volumes of C&D waste into profit by deploying specialized screening and processing equipment and implementing best practices when handling C&D material. McLanahan was proud to be a sponsor of the event, where students, faculty and industry professionals engaged in dynamic talks, had the opportunity to network and celebrated the future of mining in Pennsylvania.
