We just released Taro's newest course about what life is really like at FAANG. So much of the discussion about working at FAANG focuses on things like the scale of the work or the free snacks. But on the day-to-day level, an engineer at Google or Facebook doesn't think about these topics. They are spending most of their waking hours on things like: - how much scope do they have? - how much control do they have vs just being a cog in the machine - what do their coworkers think about them? Annnnd another new job… This is a cool one. TypeScript / Node.js Engineer Remote. High ownership. It’s remote in the NL though. Remote in the NL. Remote in the NL. ⚠️ It’s also perm, definitely perm. This one is perm. They want a permanent Engineer. Perm. ⚠️ Looking for a certain type of developer. Someone who actually cares about what they build. Creative. Clear communicator. Fun to work with. Can take feedback without getting weird about it. Knows they’re building a career and a reputation, not just shipping tickets. Stack right now: TypeScript, Node.js, Nest.js, Google Cloud, Terraform. Tools matter less than fundamentals. If you’re genuinely strong in JavaScript and TypeScript, you’ll adapt. Experience level is irrelevant. I’ll take a sharp 5 YOE engineer with high standards and a healthy work ethic over 15 YOE on cruise control. You should: • Lean into AI and LLMs • Use them to get 5x more done, not the same work faster • Care about clean, pragmatic output • Know when to cut corners and when not to You get: • Make your own hours • Work from wherever • High trust • Real responsibility Why isn’t the salary on the job description? It is. 65-95k, depending on experience. Freedom is real. So is accountability. This is a fun one. And yet Big Tech is betting in AI replacing software engineers in a big way. Microsoft alone is basing full-time employees’ reviews on how much they utilize AI. I’ve lived this before as IT staffing was shipped offshore to lower cost areas like India and Argentina, saying that senior roles won’t be moved. Then they were once those offshore junior staff became senior. No surprise. Then they did it again with software engineers. Now they’re doing it again but with AI. There’s one HUGE problem with that, aside from the constant gutting of higher paid careers in the U.S., and that is how do you expect to have senior engineers to monitor for and correct AI mistakes if you don’t invest in junior engineers to be the next generation of senior engineers? That is my mission as co-founder of Between2Pines Consulting, to make sure junior talent is fostered to become the next generation of senior engineers. I always tell devs: if you're stuck on what to build with AI, reverse-engineer real tools. Try this: - Look at GitHub Copilot—what does it automate? - Use Grammarly—how does it rewrite? - Play with Notion AI—what prompts power it? Then, recreate a tiny version of one. That’s the best way to learn.
