Bill Daniher shared thisFirst-rate AI-focused live event last night by UCSC! It was great to review how AI is reshaping the landscape for students and society, balanced with a healthy dose of the concerns that go along with the obvious benefits. Inspiring to see the leadership these professors are providing and their commitment to an interdisciplinary approach across the university.Bill Daniher shared thisArtificial intelligence is reshaping how we understand — and solve — the world’s most complex challenges. It was a pleasure to be part of a special installment of our Kraw Lecture Series last night that brought this into sharp focus. Thank you to Ahmad Thomas, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, for guiding such a thoughtful and forward-looking conversation, and to our outstanding faculty — Yi Zhang, Leilani Gilpin, and Jason Eshraghian — for sharing their work and perspectives. Listening to the panel reinforced for me how deeply interdisciplinary the work in this field is at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Across engineering, the sciences, the humanities, and the arts, our researchers and students are not only advancing AI, they are asking the critical questions that will shape how it is used, understood, and governed. We are building systems that are more powerful, yes — but also more transparent, more trustworthy, and more aligned with human values. I’m grateful to George Kraw and his wife Rafe for their vision in supporting this series, and to our partners at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group for helping bring together leaders across sectors for conversations that truly matter. The pace of change in AI is extraordinary. So is the opportunity — and the responsibility — to get it right.

Bill Daniher shared thisThe eDNA program at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is a major research and conservation initiative focused on environmental DNA (eDNA)—the genetic material that organisms naturally shed into their environment (water, soil, or air). It is a non-evasive method to detect how ecosystems are changing. Truly impressive research!Bill Daniher shared thisThree of our UC Santa Cruz Science superstars presented their extraordinary work to the University of California, Santa Cruz Foundation Board today! Thank you to Rachel Meyer, Roxanne Beltran, and Elizabeth Howard for showcasing how we are changing students lives through degree-defining fieldwork experiences, while at the same time finding solutions to our planet’s most pressing environmental and climate challenges.

Bill Daniher reposted thisBill Daniher reposted this“It took the Navy 75 years to convert from sail to steam, 20 years to decide to build the first oil burning ship, and little more than one decade to create a fleet of nuclear powered ships. We now have afloat a nuclear prototype of every ship type needed by a modern Navy – aircraft carrier, cruiser, destroyer, missile submarine, and other types of nuclear submarines intended for a variety of tasks from reconnaissance to attack of other submarines and surface ships. “The Naval Reactor Group – then but two men – received its assignment in the fall of 1947. The design of the first atomic submarine was begun in 1949. The first atomic power plant in the world, the land prototype of the Nautilus atomic power plant, was started up in the Idaho desert on March 30, 1953, running continuously for as long as it would take a nuclear submarine to cross the Atlantic. Two years later, Captain Wilkinson sent his historic message “UNDERWAY ON NUCLEAR POWER”…. “A nation’s skill in transforming new sciences into new technologies is today – apart from size and population – the most important factor determining its world position and power. Knowledge increases so rapidly that any error, any lapse of attention, any neglect can topple a mighty nation from the top: We have no choice but to bend every effort to keep technologically in the vanguard. We must be ready to discard what has become obsolete as to make full use of the potentialities of new weapons. Technology favors – as one might say – now one type ship, now another. This must be accepted no matter how much it may go against sentiment. To many good Navy men the change from sail to steam was a personal tragedy; yet it had to come.” VADM H.G. Rickover “The Impact of Nuclear Propulsion on the Navy”, American Merchant Marine Conference, sponsored by the Propeller Club of the United States, Olympic Hotel, Seattle, WA, October 5, 1962. A special BZ and shout out Charles Yang for his work in digitizing the entire Rickover library of speeches, memos, and other papers - without which this quote and many to come would not be practically obtained! Bill Daniher liked thisBill Daniher liked thisUC Santa Cruz is providing two years of guaranteed university housing for new first-year and transfer students, a reflection of the campus’s longstanding commitment to advancing student success. This expanded housing commitment was made possible by years of thoughtful planning and intentional investment in expanding student housing. UCSC currently provides housing for about 9,300 students, roughly half of its undergraduates and one of the highest percentages within the UC system. Under Chancellor Larive’s leadership, the campus has been pursuing an ambitious plan to increase student housing by more than 40 percent. The plan has been a success with several projects scheduled to open in the 2026-27 academic year and more projects on the horizon. The completion of the Delaware Apartments and near-completion of our Kresge College Renewal Phases 1 and 2 and new Family Student Housing community have increased housing opportunities while replacing aging facilities with modern, welcoming spaces. More housing is on the way through the campus’s shared project with Cabrillo College, expected to open in 2027-28, and the recently approved Heller South development, which will provide housing for nearly 1,300 upper division students. “We are helping more students build a strong foundation for academic and personal success by offering them housing certainty for their first two years,” Chancellor Cynthia Larive said.

It’s surreal to see us on this list alongside many of the companies we’ve admired for years. But what excites me more is how much is still ahead. We’re building toward a future where anyone can turn an idea into a story, an ad, a film, or an entire creative world - and we need exceptional people to build it with us. Right now, we’re hiring two kinds of talent: 1. Senior leaders who want to build a function, set the standard, and help shape the next stage of OpenArt. 2. Superstar ICs who want high ownership, move incredibly fast, and do some of the best work of their careers. We’re hiring roles including: ⚙️ Engineers - Build the AI-native creative product used by millions, with high ownership and speed. 🎨 Designers - Define what creative software should look and feel like in the AI era. 📊 Data Engineers & Data Scientists - Turn massive user and creation data into better products, agents, and decisions. 🎬 Creative Directors & Video Editors - Invent AI-native production and bring creative taste into the product and help teach our agents what “great” looks like. 📣 Head of Product Marketing - Own positioning, launches, and GTM as OpenArt expands across creators and businesses. 🤝 Influencer Marketing Manager - Scale creator partnerships into one of our biggest growth channels. 🌎 Community Manager - Build a thriving creator community that drives both growth and product insight. 📈 Paid Media Strategist - Combine creative, experimentation, and data to scale paid acquisition efficiently. and many more... Mahmoud Mirmehrabi, PhD, PEng labs have advanced instruments including three XRDs for analyzing solid state. He also has small (~1 to 5 liter) reactors for making test runs of API in the desired form. Mike Chalmers of Alliant discussed compensation and the importance of aligning it to a person’s capability and performance. Their HR analysis typically finds a 15% misalignment. Mike said that this is a good time to hire sharp college graduates as some traditional employers have cut back on hiring. (Most likely due to AI.)

GPS can show where your units are. Usage data can reveal where demand is highest. Service records can help answer customer questions. And historical fleet data can help inform future routes, contracts, and bids. The question isn’t “What can we track?” It’s “What can we do differently because we know it?” We took a closer look at what GPS tracking and smart sensor data can mean for portable restroom operators, from day-to-day visibility to long-term fleet planning. Old news to many of you, but we're excited to share publicly that we are now a multi-stage firm, with a new early-stage strategy called Linse Ignition: $150m for early-stage, seed through Series C ("early" by our standards!). Alongside the $1.5B we've deployed towards growth-stage deep tech, we can now invest at pretty much any stage. We'll continue to lead growth rounds whereas on the early-stage side we'll invest alongside our friends and elite early-stage deep tech investors John Fogelsong, Brooks Morgan, Gaetano Crupi, Mark Cupta, David Ulevitch, Evan Loomis, Eric Slesinger, Christian Garrett, Matt Kraning, Jackson Moses, Eveline Buchatskiy, Steve Jurvetson, Jonathan Lacoste, Chris Magazzeni and many others! It may seem like hardware / deep tech is having its "moment," but this is only the beginning of a very long period where we will be surprised and delighted again and again by the amazing things AI can do in the physical world to improve our quality of life. https://lnkd.in/e-y8jGX4

There are few VCs who have the barbell experience of having analyzed both public tech companies & invested at the inception stage. It's like having a college professor who's also a kindergarten teacher. Our partner Elizabeth Harrow is such a unicorn. You can see why that's so useful in understanding what's going on today in her conversation with Clare O'Connor at Investor's Business Daily ... cc SHAKTI

Early stage assumptions either prove out or fall apart when distribution begins. Every single time. On October 7, I am joining the panel at GTM Unplugged LIVE, hosted by @Equity Angels, and conducting a live Q&A with @Court Lorenzini, founding CEO of @DocuSign. We will be exploring what sustainable customer traction actually requires once the easy playbooks stop working. I will be contributing perspective from @Elevate My Brand alongside what our team looks at with @Fabric VC, focusing on the day-to-day work of distribution from both operator and investor viewpoints. Credit to the organizers, the crew behind the scenes, and my fellow panelists for putting real sales execution and team effort front and center.

Two articles I've been thinking about together this week: Amir Kabir at Overlook VC on "the defining tension of 2026: extraordinary concentration at the infrastructure layer, extraordinary democratization at the application layer" Take a read: https://lnkd.in/gyaFg-nB And Isaac Arnold's framework for what actually makes an application layer company durable: workflow entanglement, domain specific knowledge, and data that compounds from usage rather than just intelligence. Take a read for yourself: https://lnkd.in/gSDXA-vH Amir identifies where the opportunity is, Isaac identifies why most companies building there won't capture it durably and what separates the ones that will.

AI and associated computing costs are sending VC-backed CAPEX through the roof Venture debt is picking up the slack - as evidenced by PitchBook reporting Perhaps most interesting is the dislocation in deal counts and deal value post SVB and first republic crashes Anecdotally - we’ve seen a reinvigoration of interest from our tech clients in exploring this financing mechanism Is venture debt having a renaissance? #startups #venturecapital #privateequity

Big one for us at K8 today. We just announced a $250m facility with Liquid Compute so AI companies don’t have to burn through their equity just to put down deposits on compute. You raise a round to build the team and product, then a chunk of that money gets tied up before you’ve even started using the compute. That’s a pretty painful use of your equity. This lets companies finance those deposits with credit backed by the compute capacity they’ve contracted. The operator still gets paid upfront, and the founder keeps more of their equity available to build the business. We’re also equity investors in Liquid Compute, which makes this especially fun for us. This is exactly the kind of work we built K8 to do: back founders and get involved in solving the financing problems that stand in the way of their growth. Big credit to my partner Chris Frissora and the Liquid Compute team for getting this done. If you’re working through a big compute prepayment right now, we’d love to talk. Congrats Ronit Jain Stanley Lee Aarav Patel!

New founder Q&A on our site! Love what Ralph Betesh is building at Coverdash! Anyone who has insured a small business knows the drill: a phone call, a PDF, and a week of waiting. Coverdash turned that into a few clicks — and then put it inside the platforms small businesses already use, so coverage gets offered at the moment of need instead of chased down later. That last part is what got our attention. Insurance is a distribution business more than a product business, and owning the point of sale is a durable advantage in a market this fragmented. Link below — worth a few minutes.

🚨NEW EPISODE: Recorded live at FUTURE TITANS 2026 - Jeff Perry of Carta sat down with the iconic Seth Levine, co-founder of Foundry. Seth has been in venture for 25 years, built Foundry from scratch as an emerging manager himself, and has backed about 50 emerging manager funds through his fund of funds. He has genuinely seen every side of this table. They went deep on building Foundry, why VCs are in the influence business, not the decision business, and why the concentration problem in venture is not only bad for LPs, but also for the innovation ecosystem overall. And why Seth's new book, Capital Evolution, is so important for the future of America. 🎧 Links to listen... Apple: https://lnkd.in/ehQUQ2EM Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eU4FExpg
