✨I live in a small town full of small business owners, who don’t understand marketing.✨ I don’t say that to be mean… I say it because so many of their business marketing posts shared on community social media pages start like… “My business is going under. Please help. Buy my services at 50% off.” In the current economic climate, I get it. Desperation in your marketing content isn’t a tactic — it’s an earnest, heartfelt plea. But. 🚫It. Won’t. Work. For one thing, desperation will scare off potential buyers just about every time. For another…people just don’t care. That’s harsh, but stay with me. If you want to sell your services or products, don’t start out telling your audience or target market what they can do for you… 🌈SHOW them what your products or services can do for them. Flip the script. Instead of, “I’m desperate” Try, “here’s how my services can help solve a problem.” Specifically, I saw a post from a vent cleaning business. In ten minutes I researched the benefits of vent cleaning. I gently reached out and said, maybe you could try leading your posts with some benefits of vent cleaning… 🤧 You know, “Got allergies? Try vent cleaning” type of posts. The problem: spring allergies (both timely and wide-ranging) 📋 The solution: your vent cleaning But most business owners don’t want to hear it. Even when advice is given freely. And I’m convinced it’s a huge part of WHY many businesses fail in the first year, and many more within the first five years. 💡Ask not what your audience can do for you. . . .if you repeatedly post content with tips or instructions for other voice talent. You're basically demonstrating YOU HAVE NO CLUE how social media is meant to be used to capture the attention of future clients. Unless you are PRIMARILY a coach, demo producer, industry conference, or other tech vendor, posts about warm-ups, travel rigs, genre tutorials, and pillow forts serve no purpose other than harvesting vanity likes. "BUT, BUT, BUT COREY. . .I want to help the VO community. And all of the likes and comments I get from my talent buddies on those posts make me feel pretty good." If you wanna feel good, adopt a puppy at the pound or volunteer to feed the homeless. If you wanna make MONEY and grow your BUSINESS, HELP YOURSELF and learn how to cultivate relationships with potential CLIENTS. Because so many of you do not know what/how to post and/or have no strategy in place to post consistently, you stubbornly default to tapping in to the low-hanging fruit of superficial thumbs-ups from the cozy confines of your peer bubble. Social media marketing is LESS about sharing content about what you DO with others that do THE SAME AS YOU. . . And MORE about sharing who you ARE and building know, like, and trust with STRANGERS THAT CAN HIRE YOU. . . You are so much more than just a voice talent. Learn how to let the world know. . . Busy doesn’t have to mean inconsistent, your content strategy can be simple. Here’s the mistake I see most: business owners try to be everywhere, all the time. That’s a fast track to burnout and half-baked content. A good content strategy doesn’t start with “what should we post?” It starts with clarity: what do we want our audience to remember about us? From there, think in pillars. Three to four themes that tie back to your business and values. For example: • Share behind-the-scenes of your work (builds trust). • Highlight client stories (shows results). • Offer quick tips (positions you as helpful). • Drop occasional personal reflections (reminds people you’re human). Pick one platform to prioritize. Show up there consistently before spreading thin. Even two strong posts a week will outperform seven rushed ones. And here’s the simplest rhythm: listen, create, measure, repeat. The feedback from your audience is the best strategy tool you’ll ever have. Everyone talks about ‘knowing your audience’ - but here’s what that means in practice... [5 steps to make your content align with your ICP] If your content isn’t working, it’s probably not how often you’re posting. It’s whether your message is aligned with the right people, in the right way. Here’s how I ensure all my client’s content speaks to their ICP: (1) Get specific about who you’re talking to Not ‘coaches’ or ‘B2B businesses’ - but ‘time-poor coaches with a 1:1 offer’ ✅ The clearer the picture, the more targeted your message (2) Define their pain in THEIR words Think about what they’re googling at 11pm. What’s the problem behind the problem? ✅ Use language they would say out loud - not industry terms. (3) Learn how they make decisions Don’t just blast content at them - guide them. ✅ What do they need to understand, believe or feel before they’re ready to buy? (4) Position your offer as a direct solution Make the link between what they’re struggling with and how you help completely obvious. ✅ If they can’t connect the dots, they won’t convert. (5) Build content around their consumption behaviour When are they active? What content do they usually engage with? Do they read or scan? Do they hang out in the DM’s? ✅ Create for how they use social media. ICP-content alignment means more than just knowing your niche. It means building every part of your content and social media strategy around how your ideal client thinks, decides, and buys. This is the biggest problem in podcasting today. And no, it's not just copying Rogan. Or interviewing randoms. It's much simpler. ➜ They don't create an experience! There's a reason you listen to your favorite song 100 times. You want to feel that experience again. So, what makes a great podcast? Let's reframe the question. "How do I create an experience?" You're creating a world inside your podcast. I didn't even understand this... I thought I was in the podcast business when I started this in 2020, but after 200+ shows, I learned one thing. I'm not in the podcast business 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭. I'm in the 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 business. The "𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴" experience.
