Agreed to Samantha's thoughts here, though I would add the caveat of "don't text or email OUR PERSONAL phones or accounts." It's invasive and unprofessional. Use professional channels — Like many journalists, I have a work phone and a work email account. Text and email those all you like. That's what they're for. I give out that information for that purpose. But the second I see a pitch from a random PR person on my personal channels, that's spam and you're getting blocked. I get that some reporters don't have a work phone, but err on the side of professional channels if you don't know — as Samantha says, USE EMAIL. Pitch on topic — I always shake my head whenever I get pitches that start with "I see you cover AI..." because from your first line I see that you haven't done a modicum of research into what I cover and are effectively spamming me. Sure, I briefly wrote about AI... for a different pub... multiple years ago... But if you start your pitch with a neon sign indicating your lack of attention to what I do, why should I pay your pitch any?

If I were in college and wanted to work in public affairs, I wouldn’t wait for a job posting. I’d look for the rooms where decisions are being made and find a way to get in. That might mean working for a campaign, shadowing someone at the Capitol, interning with a trade association, or volunteering for a ballot initiative that needs bodies on the ground. This isn’t an industry where titles matter right away. What matters is proximity. You learn by doing. You learn by watching people who are actually moving the needle, and asking questions when they’re willing to talk. Public affairs is about influence, not attention. You don’t need to be loud, but you do need to be sharp. Learn how to read people. Learn how to listen. Learn how to explain something complicated in plain language. If you’re thinking about this as a career, don’t get hung up on the perfect job title. Get yourself as close to the action as possible. Everything else will come from there.
