Bill Wappler liked thisBill Wappler liked thisToday is one year since I retired from the School of Engineering and Technology at the UWT. It has, as do most years, flown by. On day one I decided to begin practicing Tai Chi and committed to a daily practice, which settled in at about 21 minutes as a morning routine. It felt great to write and circle 365 on my daily to do list. Without deliberately changing any other habits, I have dropped 20 pounds and have greater flexibility and balance. I will be keeping it up. I visited my family in Marina Del Rey, traveled with my sisters, camped multiple times, spent many concert and event days at the WA State Fair and spent a few days in Sunriver. I played in the World Series of Poker and have written two Murder Mystery Dinner Scripts (one already performed, the next in November) I continue to act as a Dressel Scholars Mentor and have a SET Advisory Board meeting coming up. On to year two.

Bill Wappler liked thisBill Wappler liked thisI finished my internship at Balyasny Asset Management L.P. and my first summer in the ATLAS Fellows program! I learned a lot along the way (including an impromptu lesson on acquisitions the Friday before my final presentation...) Thank you to Kejia Sun and Jonah Mayer for having me on their team. My final project would not be possible without Jonah's incredible mentorship and guidance; just a few months ago, the idea of creating a stock pitch would've been very intimidating to me. Thank you to Erica Eisenberg, Molly Voreacos, and the rest of the ATLAS team for making this experience possible. Through all the trainings, teach-ins, and site visits, I've learned more about what a role in the finance industry can look like. (On that note, thank you to Bloomberg, Baird, JPMorganChase, Wolfe Research, LLC, and BAM for supporting ATLAS and making my experience unforgettable!) Thank you to the other fellows! You are all so incredibly talented and dedicated that I cannot help but wonder how I got put in your cohort. Being around you encouraged me to work harder (and helped me relax when I needed it...) 🏓

Bill Wappler liked thisBill Wappler liked thisThis summer, I had the enormous pleasure and opportunity to intern at Balyasny Asset Management L.P. under the Fund Accounting team. I learned so much about financial statements such as the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows and how to put them in the context of a company's financial performance. This culminated in a final presentation where I presented this concept to BAM employees and fellow ATLAS Fellows. Thank you to my mentor Patrick Walling, CPA for being so patient and informative. I enjoyed our daily calls and meetings where I got to understand the role of a fund accountant in the context of a large hedge fund such as BAM. Thank you to the ATLAS Fellows team: Phoebe Anderson, Erica Eisenberg, Molly Voreacos, Emil Kim and Alyse Amato for their incredible mentorship in regards to how to succeed in college and career. Thank you to Dmitry Balyasny and his wife, Rebecca Balyasny, for starting ATLAS and giving kids like me with no network access to a financial network and more. Thank you to all the BAM professionals who spent time with me coffee chatting and teaching me about their jobs. I learned so much about the variety of roles at BAM and will implement all of the advice you all gave me. Lastly, thank you to the ATLAS fellows for explaining their final projects to me. I am so fascinated and proud of all the work you all did and hope to continue witnessing your future successes to cheer you on! This summer was surreal to say the least. Having three monitors, access to the Bloomberg Terminal and visiting Bloomberg, Wolfe Research, LLC and NYSE helped enrich my experience and I can't wait to continue striving for the best and reaching new milestones in the future!

The bifurcation between disciplined public credit and stressed private credit is widening. High yield bonds remain resilient with elevated yields and low idiosyncratic defaults, but this is not a moment to be complacent. Learn more in our Mid-Year Credit Outlook 2026 >> https://lnkd.in/eMkwkgvu

Most of the value in financial planning has nothing to do with picking better investments... Vanguard’s Advisor’s Alpha research made this clear years ago, but it’s still widely misunderstood. The biggest contributors to long-term outcomes aren’t market timing or security selection. They’re things like: behavioral discipline during stress tax-aware decisions over time coordinating savings, withdrawals, and risk In other words, avoiding unforced errors matters more than finding incremental alpha. From both a teaching and planning perspective, this makes intuitive sense. Financial markets are competitive. Human decision-making under uncertainty is not. Where I see this play out most clearly is during transitions — retirement, job changes, inheritance, market drawdowns — when the cost of a poorly timed decision can permanently alter a plan. Good planning isn’t about being clever. It’s about building systems that protect people from themselves when it matters most. #wealthmanagement #financialplanning #academicfinance #professoroffinance Disclosure: The information provided is for educational purposes only and should not be considered personalized financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. PIMCO's Lotfi Karoui shows ABF is the diversifier direct lending was supposed to be Karoui puts it plainly: private credit's most compelling opportunity isn't where the spotlight is. ABF delivers: ~Returns driven by collateral, not corporate earnings cycles ~Investment-grade-like risk profiles ~Greater resilience to market downturns than direct lending The opportunity spans real estate, consumer credit, and specialty finance - still broadly underappreciated. As the cycle matures, the edge belongs to platforms that built ABF expertise when markets gave them time. #AssetBasedFinance #PrivateCredit #ABFGlobalSearch Source:Pimco Article in comments

Private credit's software problem creates a potential opportunity for high yield as exposure gaps reveal structural vulnerabilities in direct lending portfolios. Anne Greenwood, Institutional Portfolio Manager on RBC GAM's BlueBay U.S. Fixed Income team, analyzes how AI-driven repricing may redirect capital flows across credit markets. 📊 Widespread credit repricing pushes spreads to widest levels since last year, driven primarily by software sector concerns, while energy tightens on geopolitical supply pressures. ⚠️ Direct lending holds over 30% software exposure compared to less than 4% in high yield, concentrating AI displacement risk where liquidity is most constrained and underwriting scrutiny intensifying. 💡 Investors pausing private credit allocations may find natural alternatives in today's higher-quality, more liquid high yield market with minimal software sector overlap. Watch Anne Greenwood’s full insights below. https://bit.ly/4ddMS6T #TheWeeklyFix #PrivateCredit #FixedIncome #HighYield
