The best CMOs are efficient and bold. “If we drive efficiency in the attributable, we earn the right to experiment in the un-attributable.” SCREAM IT FROM THE BACK. I had the opportunity to listen in on a panel discussion between Ray Rike, 🌱 Allison Munro, and Jon Miller, who discussed research from 323 companies around budgeting and spend at Pavilion's CMO Summit. And if you are in a room with Allison and Jon, you listen. And the data was loud and clear: Marketing budgets are up. Not down. Not flat but up by 1% of revenue on average and almost 10% in absolute dollars. Yes, even in this “do more with less” era. Growth = Budget >>> The faster you grow, the more budget you get. Companies growing over 30%? Median marketing budget is 15% of revenue. (That’s double the average.) People vs Programs vs AI >>> Budgets are shifting from people to programs. And AI is doubling its share of spend, from 4% to 8% YOY. AI isn’t a line item. It’s a headcount replacement. Events are making a comeback. As ACV increases, event spend also rises. Demand gen spend goes down. Why? Because no one attributes brand until it's lost. Want to protect brand? Get headcount? Increase programs? Then model your budget, benchmark it, and tell the story before the CFO asks.

Since I became CEO of Canvas Medical this time last year, Andrew Hines has been heads down building our Applied AI team and first AI powered solutions on the Canvas platform. The Canvas AI Governance system his team has built to help our customers deploy, host, and govern AI agents is 🤯 In combination with the SDK, which enables agents to operate with full context and chaining in the EMR runtime, it unlocks the power of agents in Canvas. One of the coolest things from my perspective is the role AI continues to play in that development. It's 💯necessary to have solid ground truth with which evaluate AI products, and in the case of clinical products, it must come from physicians. AI can't do that for you. But it's really hard to engage qualified physicians for this work. Luckily we have a friend in Paulius Mui, MD and XPC, who has recruited a world class set of experts to help us build evaluation rubrics. Once we solved the recruitment problem, we also needed a good user interface. A usable, reliable web app to do the validation work that could combine with our expertly engineered governance data model and APIs. Enter Claude Code. Using that tool, we built the entire clinician frontend for our evaluations team in 4 days! 🚀 Think about it: Humans using AI to make software that humans use to evaluate AI that can then safely do work for humans. We are living in a compounding AI world.

We've nearly reached the midpoint of 2025, and it feels like a great time to take stock of some of the key trends in VC investment. Perhaps what is most notable is the continued, albeit more focused, interest in AI.
