What is iCloud Drive in detail?

Apple has offered its own cloud storage solution, iCloud, since 2011 for backing up photos, videos, and other data. iCloud Drive was in­tro­duced alongside it and has been steadily improved ever since. It handles file storage within iCloud, keeping documents and folders in sync across your devices, while system backups are managed sep­a­rate­ly through iCloud’s backup features. iCloud Drive also makes it easy to save, edit, and share common file formats. How does iCloud Drive work?

You sign in to iCloud Drive with your Apple account (formerly Apple ID) to save files or access existing data in iCloud. You can sign in with one account on multiple devices. In par­tic­u­lar, Apple ap­pli­ca­tions like Keynote or Numbers are com­pat­i­ble with iCloud Drive. This means you can open, edit, and save files directly in iCloud Drive. Any changes made to a file are im­me­di­ate­ly syn­chro­nized across all devices, enabling cross-device work, even with multiple people. You can also share specific folders and files via links, allowing people without iCloud Drive to access them.

iCloud Drive storage plans and upgrades

iCloud Drive is free to use with 5 GB of storage included. If you need more space, you can upgrade with a monthly sub­scrip­tion to 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, or even 12 TB, which activates iCloud+ as Apple’s paid tier.

Beyond ad­di­tion­al storage, iCloud+ focuses on privacy and con­ve­nience features. These include iCloud Private Relay for more private browsing and “Hide My Email,” which lets you generate random email addresses. You also get options like custom email domains and secure video recording for HomeKit-enabled cameras.

Avail­abil­i­ty of iCloud Drive

iCloud Drive is available for different devices and operating systems:

• iPhone: iCloud Drive has been available in a limited form since iOS 8. Full func­tion­al­i­ty was in­tro­duced with iOS 11, where it was also in­te­grat­ed into the pre­in­stalled Apple Files app.
• iPad: Support also began with iOS 8. Since iPadOS 13, iCloud Drive is fully in­te­grat­ed into the Apple Files app.
• MacBooks: iCloud Drive has been supported on Macs since macOS 10.10 Yosemite. For reliable per­for­mance and full features, es­pe­cial­ly file sharing, newer versions starting with macOS 10.13 High Sierra are rec­om­mend­ed.
• Android smart­phones and tablets: There is no dedicated app for Android devices. Instead, you access iCloud Drive through a browser at iCloud.com.
• Laptops and computers: On Windows PCs, you can install iCloud for Windows, which adds iCloud Drive as a folder in File Explorer. You can also access it through a browser if needed.

How to set up iCloud Drive

When you sign in to an Apple device for the first time, you are prompted to log in with your Apple ID. During setup, you can choose which data and apps should sync with iCloud. These settings can be adjusted at any time later in System Settings (or Settings on iPhone/iPad) under your Apple ID and the “iCloud” section.

On iPhone and iPad, you can access your files through the pre­in­stalled “Files” app, where iCloud Drive appears as a storage location. On a Mac, open Finder and select “iCloud Drive” from the sidebar to view and manage your files.
