Lake Dreams and Cookie Crumbs: A Retreat for All Awaits at DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve gazed up at the Clock Tower here. No matter how long I linger, it always stirs a warm sense of nostalgia. Against the glorious hues of a Putrajaya sunset, it looks positively romantic, an ideal backdrop for a small, intimate wedding. At least that’s how I imagined it, until my friend nudged me back to reality: “Ready to check in?”

We are at DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside, a resort that hardly needs an introduction to Malaysians. It’s long been a favourite for city dwellers craving a staycation that feels worlds away yet sits conveniently near to the city. Perhaps it’s the vast, glassy expanse of Putrajaya Lake lapping quietly at its edges. Life, at least temporarily, feels quieter, gentler, more forgiving.
Check-in is seamless, done and dusted in less than ten minutes. Before we can even wheel our suitcases into the lift, we’re handed the DoubleTree’s famous warm chocolate chip cookies. I keep telling myself I should be watching my waistline, but honestly, who in their right mind says no to chocolate chip cookies?

The resort is sprawling, with nearly 300 rooms spread across four wings and 14 room categories. My sanctuary for the stay is a King Bed Executive Room, which is contemporary in spirit but tinged with retro charm, thanks to its pendant lighting and bedside lamps. It is cosy and designed to make you forget the outside world exists. For a real treat, I’d recommend opting for the lake view, because waking up to mirrored waters is always worth it.

Inside, you’ll find a 50-inch HDTV, a work desk, day bed, minibar, and of course, a king-sized bed so sinfully comfortable you’ll consider cancelling your itinerary altogether. The bathroom keeps things sleek with a separate tub and shower, plus that ring-lit mirror that makes applying make-up so much easier. Amenities come courtesy of Crabtree & Evelyn, because of course they do.
Come dinnertime, there’s really only one destination: Makan Kitchen. I’ve dined here more times than I care to admit, and my repeat visits alone should tell you something. The buffet is vast, but the highlight is its proud showcase of Malaysian cuisine. Malay, Chinese, and Indian stations stand proudly side by side, each vying for your appetite.

The Indian corner is a crowd favourite, thanks to the succulent tandoori chicken, an array of curries, and that comforting cheese naan. But personally, the Chinese spread has my heart with its chilli crab and wok-tossed fried rice, while the Malay selection delivers classic flavours that you’d happily return to, plate after plate. Whatever your palate craves, chances are Makan Kitchen has it covered.
Breakfast here is just as indulgent. Beyond the usual Intercontinental fare, there’s roti canai flipped to order, banana pancakes, kacang pool, and fragrant nasi dagang. As I tucked into my plate, I felt an unmistakable swell of pride; our food really is spectacular, and at Makan Kitchen, it is presented with such flair.

For something lighter, The Koffee is the hotel’s cosy café, serving freshly brewed coffee, teas, and nibbles. Ladies (and gents with a sweet tooth), don’t miss the afternoon tea set. Served in a sunlit space framed multiple windows, it’s the kind of spot that makes hours slip away over good conversation and dainty cakes. The menu rotates every few months, so there’s always something new to sample.
Executive Room and Suite guests along with Hilton Honors Diamond members also enjoy access to the Executive Lounge, complete with complimentary evening cocktails from 5:00 p.m., ideal for those who like their pre-dinner snacks with a side of exclusivity.

Of course, after all the feasting, a little movement feels necessary. The 24-hour gym is vast and impressively equipped, so there’s no jostling for treadmills. Prefer the water? The resort boasts not one but three swimming pools. Children squeal happily at the Splash Pool playground, while adults gravitate towards the rooftop’s adults-only pool. On top of these, families can even enjoy the arcade room, games room, and a kids’ club stocked with toys and a PS5 as well.

Personally, I prefer the infinity pool by the lake, stretched out on a lounger with a novel in hand as the water glitters beyond. Ahh…what a bliss. However, should you tire of poolside lounging, step outside and explore the hotel’s lakeside setting. Be sure to follow the walking track that circles past local landmarks such as the Seri Gemilang Bridge and Marina Putrajaya, where water sports await.

All in all, DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside delivers in every aspect. It is close enough to Kuala Lumpur for a spontaneous escape, yet far enough to feel like a holiday. Whether you come for romance, family fun, or simply to laze by the lake with a cookie in hand, you’ll leave rested, well-fed, and perhaps even a little reluctant to return to real life.
