Jambo Nairobi!

Have you ever hopped on a plane, flown across continents, and stepped straight into a dream? That’s exactly what I did recently when I boarded AirAsia’s brand-new direct flight from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Nairobi in Kenya!

Yes, you read that right: AirAsia now offers the direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi, making it easier than ever to explore the stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and incredible wildlife of Kenya.

Let me tell you, this nine-hour flight was nothing short of amazing. AirAsia knows how to keep you comfortable at 35,000 feet. From affordable ticket prices (yes, budget travellers, rejoice!) to the cheerful cabin crew, the airline successfully nails the art of travel. I opted for the Premium Flatbed seats; trust me, choosing a seat that allows you to lie down and snooze during a long-haul flight is one of the best decisions you could make in your life! However, if you were to fly economy, fret not – the airline’s seats are spacious, and the in-flight entertainment will keep you entertained all the way to the African continent.

The meal options provided during the flight were also a highlight for me. I had the Grilled Peri Chicken with Jollof Rice, which is as good in the air as it is on the ground. Oh, and don’t forget to pre-book your meals online for a smoother in-flight experience since the airlines offers plenty of tasty choices to suit all palates.Touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I was greeted with the warm, welcoming vibe of Kenya. After a smooth immigration process and baggage collection, I was ready to start my Nairobi adventure!

Nairobi: A City of Wildlife, Culture, and Flavor

The Giraffe Kiss You Didn’t Know You Needed

First stop: the Giraffe Centre, where I had one of the most unique experiences of my life. Picture this-giraffes gracefully wandering up to a raised platform where you stand, holding out a pellet. Their heads dip down, their long purple tongues dart out, and voila! A gentle, slimy kiss (if you dare). These endangered Rothschild giraffes are not only beautiful but also incredibly charming.

The center doubles as a conservation hub, where you can learn about efforts to save giraffes in Kenya. Don’t forget to check out the small gift shop, where proceeds go toward wildlife conservation.

Pro tip: Visit in the morning when the giraffes are most active and hungry for treats.

Wild Mornings at Nairobi National Park

A 15-minute drive from the city center, Nairobi National Park offers a safari experience like no other. Imagine vast savannahs dotted with wildlife like lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos-all with Nairobi’s city skyline in the background. It’s surreal and something you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

I joined a half-day game drive and was lucky enough to spot a lioness lounging under an acacia tree and a hard of zebras galloping in the distance. The park is also home to black rhinos, a critically endangered species. Keep your camera ready-wildlife sightings happen when you least expect them!

Baby Elephants at David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Prepare to have your heart melted at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a sanctuary for orphaned elephants. Every morning, the young elephants march out for their feeding time, and visitors get to watch them guzzle milk from oversized bottles. Some of the cheekier ones even spray themselves (and sometimes the crowd) with water from their trunks!

Hearing the caretakers share each elephant’s rescue story was incredibly moving. Most of these little ones were orphaned due to poaching or natural disasters, and the trust works tirelessly to rehabilitate them for release back into the wild. If you’re looking to make your visit extra special, consider “adopting” an elephant-you’ll receive regular updates about your chosen calf.

Shopping Adventures: From Curio Shops to Local Markets

Nairobi is a shopper’s paradise! The Utamaduni Curio Shops are perfect for those looking for hand-carved sculptures, colorful fabrics, and unique trinkets. But for a more immersive experience, head to the Maasai Market. This buzzing open-air bazaar is a riot of colors, sounds, and haggling fun.

At the Maasai Market, I bartered for beaded jewelry, vibrant paintings, and woven baskets. It’s not just shopping; it’s cultural experience. My advice? Embrace the art of negotiation but do it with a smile. Vendors are friendly and often willing to share the stories behind their crafts.

Foodie Heaven in Nairobi

Nairobi’s food scene is as diverse as its wildlife. The Talisman Restaurant served up some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Think spiced lamb samosas that melt in your mouth and fresh cocktails that pair perfectly with the garden ambiance.

Then there’s the iconic Carnivore Cafe, where you can feast on an epic selection of grilled meats. Ever tried crocodile or ostrich? Now’s your chance! It’s a protein-packed adventure that will leave you stuffed but satisfied.

A Glimpse into Kenyan Tribal Life at Bomas of Kenya

One of the most memorable stops on my trip was at Bomas of Kenya, where I had the chance to immerse myself in Kenya’s tribal heritage. This cultural hub showcases the unique homes, traditions, and lifestyles of Kenya’s tribes.

I stepped inside a traditional Manyatta, a house built with mud and sticks, commonly used by the Maasai tribe. It was fascinating to learn how these homes are constructed and how they reflect the resourcefulness of Kenya’s indigenous communities. The guide shared stories of tribal customs, including how they celebrate milestones, their traditional dances, and the symbolic meaning of their beadwork.

The experience was a beautiful reminder of the diversity and richness of Kenya’s culture. It left me with a deeper appreciation of the history and resilience of the Kenyan people.

Art, Culture, and Relaxation

For art enthusiasts, Golden Eagle Arts is a must-visit. This gallery is bursting with African-inspired paintings, sculptures, and crafts that make for stunning souvenirs or just a feast for the eyes. History buffs will love the Nairobi Museum, where you can explore exhibits on Kenya’s tribal heritage, fascinating fossils, and even the origins of humankind.

After my whirlwind days, I retreated to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, an oasis of luxury. Think plush beds, panoramic city views, and a spa that melts away every ounce of jet lag.

Pro tip: Start your mornings with their hearty breakfast buffet-it’s the fuel you need for a day of exploring.
