Ooni Koda 12 Pizza Oven

Specs

  • Fuel source: Gas-powered
  • Temperature Range: Reaches 950°F
  • Pizza diameter: 12 inches
  • Dimensions: 24.4” L x 15.5” W x 11.7” H
  • Weight: 20.4 lb.

Upsides

  • Portable
  • Easy to set up
  • Bakes pizza in 60 seconds (15 minutes to come to temperature)

Downsides

  • Outdoor use only

Ooni has been around since 2012 and has quite a collection of models, but the Koda 12, a gas-powered portable pizza oven, is one of the most popular. It only takes 15 minutes to reach 950°F (500°C) and just 60 seconds to cook your Neapolitan-style pie. Setup is easy, just flip down the foldable stainless steel legs and connect the pizza oven to a propane tank. “Having an infrared temperature gun, which you can get as an add-on, is a good idea if you want to know exactly what internal temp you're getting,” says Zoë Sessums, senior digital design editor who tested the Koda 12. “Perfecting your pizzaiolo skills is where the real work comes in, but the ease of use for the Ooni makes it worth it.”

Gozney Roccbox Pizza Oven

  • Temperature Range: Reaches 950°F
  • Pizza diameter: 12 inches
  • Dimensions: 14.51"H x 15.14"W x 21.04"D
  • Weight: 44 lb.

Upsides

  • Built-in thermometer
  • Safe-touch silicone jacket
  • Restaurant-grade

Downsides

  • Difficult to carry long distances

Gozney Roccbox is another stellar portable pizza oven on the market. This model first launched in 2016 and has been going strong ever since. The Roccbox is simple to set up—just open the box and unfold the retractable legs, connect the detachable burner (it comes with a wood or gas option), and hook up your propane tank (if you’re using it). You can expect the Roccbox to be up to temperature (it also reaches up to 950°F) in around 20 to 30 minutes on gas and about 40 minutes on wood. While the Roccbox is portable, it weighs more than 40 pounds. “I did carry it up and down a flight of stairs on the regular, but I would say it’s slightly less portable—I definitely wouldn’t make it down a beach boardwalk on my own,” Sessums says, who notes that it is clear that the Roccbox was engineered to replicate Gozney’s professional pizza ovens. She thinks this model is sturdy and reliable.

Best for Countertops

Image may contain: Device, Appliance, Electrical Device, Food, Pizza, Microwave, and Oven

Specs

  • Fuel source: Electricity
  • Temperature Range: 350°F–750°F
  • Pizza diameter: 12 inches
  • Dimensions: 18.1"L x 10.6"H x 18.5"W
  • Weight: 33.07 lb.

Upsides

  • Countertop use
  • 7 presets and 1 manual mode
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Cooks different pizza styles (New York–style, pan)

Downsides

  • Expensive

The Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo implements an algorithm in the Element iQ system to get the cheesy goodness just right—and in two minutes at that. Unlike the Gozney Roccbox and the Ooni Koda 12, this option can be used indoors on your kitchen countertops, making it a perfect pizza oven for beginners. “The active deck (or stone deck) moves forward when I open the door and moves backward when I close the door,” says contributor Terri Williams, who tested this indoor pizza oven. “This makes it easy to put the pizza in and take it out.”

You can use the pizza pan or the pizza peel, but not both. “In my first go, I used the pizza peel to place the pizza directly on the stone deck,” Williams says. “However, despite sprinkling the pizza peel with flour, getting the pizza to slide off the peel onto the stone deck was not as easy as it looks in those pizza commercials. And my pizza stone no longer looked new when I took the pizza off it. It has burn marks that aren’t coming off. However, with practice, I’m sure I’ll get better at using the peel.”

Best Electric

Ooni Volt 12 Pizza Oven

Specs

  • Fuel source: Electric
  • Temperature Range: Reaches 850°F
  • Pizza diametaer: 12 inches
  • Dimensions: 24.2" W x 20.8" D x 10.9" H
  • Weight: 39.2 lb.

Upsides

  • Indoor-friendly
  • Built-in carry handles
  • Does not smoke

Downsides

  • Bulky and takes up counter space
  • On the pricier side

As far as electric pizza ovens go, the Ooni Volt 12 heats up to 850 degrees but is still suited for indoor use. This model looks similar to other Ooni models, but the Volt 12 legs are shorter and stubbier. “It’s relatively heavy for a portable pizza oven—and although I was able to move it by myself, I wouldn’t want to do it often,” Williams says in her review.

When it comes to cooking pizza, the launching process is not quite the same as when you use a regular oven (put it on a pizza pan and place it into the oven). “Instead, you’re trying to slide the pizza off of the pizza peel into the oven, which takes considerably more effort since the pizza dough tends to stick to the peel,” Williams elaborates. Yet, unlike regular ovens, this model has a digital infrared thermometer to gauge the temperature of the pizza stone. The preheating stage takes less than 20 minutes. Then, launch the pizza onto the middle of the baking stone and use a pizza peel to take the pizza out and turn it every 20 to 30 seconds. “Admittedly, I thought this was a tedious step,” Williams says. “However, the finished result was a delicious and great pizza that didn’t taste at all like store-bought assembly-line pizza.”
