Written and directed by Bafta winner Hugo Blick and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Honourable Woman is a fast-paced thriller set against an international backdrop. As a young girl, Nessa Stein witnessed the assassination of her father by the armed wing of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. Now in her late thirties, Nessa is at the forefront of the Middle East peace process. Ennobled for her campaigning work, the newly made Baroness must fight forces that are conspiring against her as she awards a highly lucrative contract to a Palestinian businessman. When he is subsequently killed, Nessa and her brother come under the close scrutiny of Whitehall and the Secret Intelligence Service. Set against the gripping backdrop of government paranoia and espionage, The Honourable Woman tells the story of one woman's personal journey to right the wrongs conducted in a past life.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2014Wow...the quality of this series has at times literally taken my breath away and has to be one of the best drama series I have ever seen. Be prepared though, it is a series you have to stick with as there are many many layers to the story, and characters that appear on the narrative surface and then slip back into the darkness (sometimes not to be seen again) is a frequent occurrence.
That being said this is a series that also delivers on the thrills with convert MI6 operations, assassinations, kidnapping and the timely background narrative of the Israeli Palestinian conflict only adds to the dramatic content. The Honourable Woman manages to find a way, through its marvelous character development and sheer narrative audacity not to take sides, and with its honourable intent to push a narrative which seeks to reconcile and communicate rather than divide it allows the audience to immerse themselves in a fantastic drama while (tragically) mirroring world events.
Watch it for the exquisite production, fantastic writing and performances from a wonderful cast. Particular kudos has to go to Maggie Gyllenhaal. What a coup to get her on board in the first place, and boy oh boy does she repay the debt with a devastatingly emotionally charged, seductive vulnerable performance, you have to see it to believe it. What a ride! What a series!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2015This is film is excellent, the pace is just right and the dialogue is economic but absolutely sufficient. I really enjoyed this series, and saw all of it in two sittings and was sorry when it was finished. I also learnt from this film - but I won`t say what it especially says since it would spoil things for the new viewer. The use of music is also sparse, but appropriate, and doesn`t dominate. This one had me guessing quite a lot, and it is not one
where you should be doing other things at the same time - you may lose the plot if you do. I recomend this film: Maggie Gyllenhaal is just right. Enjoy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2015I'm an American fan of the show who wanted to acquire a Blu-Ray copy (primarily as a failsafe, before Netflix ever has a chance to take it down). Unfortunately, there is no Blu-Ray version available for an American region, only DVD quality. Given the gorgeous cinematography, watching this movie in standard definition would be a poor substitute. I decided to purchase the Blu-Ray from UK Amazon and deal with unlocking my player sometime in the future. Imagine my elation when I popped the first disk in, just to make sure, and it actually played perfectly!
For the record, I'm watching it on a Samsung BD-P3600. The quality is just a smidge better than Netflix, without the buffering. In addition, in the first ten minutes of watching I've already noticed two small pieces of dialogue that were cut from the Netflix version.
Thank you, BBC and Hugo Blick, for putting together such an engrossing, tightly plotted show. On my fourth rewatch, I am still noticing all the subtle facial expressions and intricacies of dialogue that demonstrate who knew what when--and they yield nearly the same feeling of awe as the first viewing. What an incredible series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2015Complex, engrossing, intriguing - and one of my top three shows of 2014. Yes, you had to concentrate to untangle the machinations of fanatical Israeli and Palestinian terrorists and their not so ethical counterparts in the US, British and Israeli secret services - but it was so worth the effort. A wonderful international cast, great production values and an amazing job by writer/director/producer Hugo Blick mean this is one show I will watch - and enjoy - again and again. Bring us more TV as good as this .......
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2015I saw this series over the weekend and there are, amazingly, some very creepy similarities in real life that have developed over the past year! I am tempted, therefore, to call this writer, who is also director and producer, Prophet Hugo Blick!
But also, this intelligent writer has captured a most complicated atmosphere that exists between the Israelis and Palestinians – except that he has made it into a highly provocative TV series.
For me, this series was hypnotic. Each and every character in the series is mastered by the individual actor – and they are simply stunning. I highly recommend this series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2019Frankly one of the worst, if not the worst, serial I have watched in recent years. Too complicated plot( I had the impression the director himself was completely lost by the screenplay), drags on so it becomes boring , too much violence for my taste in addition adding nothing to making the story interesting, artificial characters although some of the acting is good. Overall in my opinion a complete waste of money. Keep away!

Jack LeronReviewed in France on 19 July 20155.0 out of 5 stars Who do you trust ?
