Charges were unsealed last week against one shooter in a deadly Gary gas station slaying, records show.
Isaiah Woods, 20, of Indianapolis, is charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, battery by means of a deadly weapon, unlawful carrying of a handgun and a misdemeanor.
Court documents allege he is the secondary shooter. Court documents for the primary shooter have not yet been unsealed.
Woods is in custody, held without bond. His next court date is Sept. 4 before Judge Salvador Vasquez.
Police responded July 20 to a gas station on the 4500 block of Broadway Avenue in Gary for a call about multiple people shot, records show.
The victim, Leandre Holley, 19, of East Chicago, was found dead inside the station, shot multiple times, charges state. His death was ruled a homicide.
Gas station footage appears to show that after Holley went back inside the gas station another time, two alleged shooters followed him.
“Chill, chill,” he appeared to say after a man, named in court records as “Shooter #1,” pointed a gun at him.
Shooter #1 appeared to chase Holley before they opened fire at each other, charges state, with guns rigged to fire automatically. A second man, Woods, appeared to also fire toward Holley and “possibly” shot Shooter #1 in the process, records show.
Woods also actively shot an unarmed bystander who appeared to be trying to flee from the gunfire, charges allege. He survived.
Two co-defendants, Charles Spires Jr., 20, and Devon Wilson, both of Gary, are each charged with assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice.
Spires is also charged with felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous person and three misdemeanors, while Wilson is also charged with two misdemeanors, filings show.
The shooting was over in 15-20 seconds, records state. Shooter #1 also ended up wounded “in the leg area,” police wrote. Wilson said he was shot in the arm, charges show.
