From sizzle to drizzle: Asheville shifts from near-record July heat to August cooldown
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — After one of the hottest Julys on record in Asheville, August is starting off as one of the coolest.
July 2025 wrapped up hot, tying with Asheville's hottest July on record: 1993.
The near-record heat carried over into the first day of August when the Asheville Regional Airport reached 89 degrees.
However, cold air damming, combined with thick cloud cover and persistent rain, plunged Asheville’s high temperatures into the mid-60s on Sunday.
Sunday’s high of 65 broke a record minimum high temperature of 71 degrees, set back in 1909.
Monday’s high of 70 degrees was well below the average high of 85.
While high temperatures are expected to stay below average through early next week, they will later rise into the upper 70s and lower 80s.
The major early August cooldown is small compared to the overall warmth we’ve experienced this year.
In 2025, Asheville has recorded 130 days with above-average high temperatures and just 74 days with below-average highs.
