This Dr K episode is disgusting, gut-churning, way worse than I was expecting. Fucking hell.
I've been in therapy. I've had breakdowns in therapy. I've been suicidal. I'm comfortable saying that out loud in public, it's not shameful. But if anybody were to broadcast the tapes of my therapy, and get paid for it, I'd probably try to murder them.
We've heard all kinds of awful, cynical, corrupt men lying and victimizing others. Joe Rogan and Co have killed people, indirectly, by encouraging them to avoid vaccinations and masks. Dr K takes the cake. He directly profits off misery. And he's a shitty fucking therapist.
I had to stop listening because I was feeling physically ill. I wrote this just to get it off my chest. I'm not sure if I'll go back to listening. Thankfully, unlike Redful, I'm self-aware enough, healthy enough, and stable enough, that I can get just turn Dr K off.
For the last 20 years this “self help speak” is so common now. Using this sort of synthesis of New Age, Self Help Books, Psuedo philosophy and pop psychology concepts. You get this sort of thing of telling people with major depressive disorder or severe anxiety problems that if you just found purpose you wouldn’t be depressed. Or saying that the reason your depressed is because your “Resisting the feelings.” allot of these thought terminating cliques.
I don’t know how common some things currently are. But I’ve seen a worrying amount of New Age stuff and Alternative medicine being brought into therapy. Allot of that Dr Phil type stuff also.
Mindfullness is the most overrated junk that for some reason has become accepted by mainstream psychology. Can it help some people? Yes. Is it effective in treating mental health problems? Not really, Even the studies themselves are not very good in quality and don’t show much of a “significant improvement” in mental health problems. Which is important. If you are suffering from a serious mental health problem. Seeking treatment and being constantly told or reminded to do mindfullness will not do much for you. “Acceptance of your depression.”
The replication crisis has been devastating most of all to psychology. Cognitive Behavior therapy has become less and less effective since the 1970s. If I was to guess why. And I’ll admit I’m shooting in the dark. It’s because psychologists and therapist are bringing in their own “Self Help” ideas and all of of people are not receiving actual Cognitive behavior therapy.
I want to hear to apologists from the UK in particular argue against the following
-
The Muslim population of the UK, and other traditionally Christian modern secular countries, is growing and the simultaneous decrease in the birth rates of "native" and non-religious groups compounds this demographic change.
-
than the secular liberal ideology of our countries, and extreme views e.g. sympathy for terrorism though they are minority views even among Muslims are overrepresented compared to every other group in society, especially the majority which is non-religious, not Christian.
-
In democracies, the bigger a group is, the more its interests are represented in government, and eventually in law and policy.
Therefore
The Muslim population is going to increase both numerically and proportionately and as it does so the UK and peer countries will become less liberal, and more socially conservative.
Submission: Sam has talked about Islam in the USA and UK before and spoke about it with Richard Dawkins in the most recent podcast.

I am certainly no fan of Tim Pool, nor others who produce content in his ecosphere, but I am feeling like many of the people who keep getting featured on this sub are not actual “gurus“. I think it’s a fair label for people like Jordan Peterson, who definitely engages in life coaching/personal improvement and growth, and creates a cult of personality in that way. But simply because certain polemicists and political hacks use some similar techniques, doesn’t really in my mind qualify them as gurus. Maybe I have too narrow a definition? What are your thoughts?
You guessed it ;p, I do enjoy listening to Sam Harris. I came to this pod for some criticism of his points and I've enjoyed listening to most of what Chris and Matt have had to say about him as well as other gurus. I have found myself frustrated at some of what they've had to say about some of them. But overall I get it and they make many solid points with good reasons as to why we should not put anyone on a pedestal/idolize them.
Im still very new to the pod, only been listening for a few weeks. Perhaps 'Anathema' is too strong a word as there is much to criticize in good faith. Still he is brought up a lot as if we should be wary of his community and like, hoards of sycophantic fans?? Kind of like he will go down in history as a cautionary tale. That's the vibe I get but I feel like I may be missing something/misunderstanding the situation. Is there a reason for this? Do Harris fans tend to be more stuck up and pretentious? Are they easy to offend? Are they bottled up in a frame of mind that Sam has imparted on them from which they struggle to see through? Was there a situation/drama of some kind that occurred? Am I just butt hurt that they criticized my favourite guru? Probably all of the above but I would like to know your thoughts!!
Although I lean centre-right in the UK, I generally agree that most of the individuals mocked in this subreddit are indeed gurus—figures like Jordan Peterson and Tim Pool being among the most notable. However, I’ve noticed that the majority of these gurus tend to be on the right. I'm not particularly interested in pointing out left-wing gurus, but I am curious: do you believe there are any right-wing commentators who act in good faith? Additionally, what do you think makes grifting and guru-ship so prevalent in the modern right-wing space? I have my own theories, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.
