Citizen Science Projects

NASAā€™s citizen science projects are collaborations between scientists and interested members of the public. Through these collaborations, volunteers (known as citizen scientists) have helped make thousands of important scientific discoveries. More than 519 NASA citizen scientists have been named as co-authors on refereed scientific publications. Want to work on some real NASA science? Click on one of the 43 projects below to get started. NASA citizen science projects are open to everyone around the world, not limited to U.S. citizens or residents.

  • Earth-shaped word cloud made up of the many languages in which NASA Citizen Science projects are available, including Arabic, Bengali, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Nepali, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese. In the center of the word cloud, the words Do NASA Science are prominent.

    Global Citizen Science Initiatives

NASA citizen science projects are not limited to U.S. citizens or residents, you can find 11 projects translated in up to 18 different languages!

Major Martian Milestones

Water-ice (blue) and dust (red) in the atmosphere of Mars above the cratered Martian surface as viewed from orbit by the THEMIS camera (false-color composite image).
This is a Hubble Space Telescope image of the barred spiral galaxy UGC 12158. The majestic galaxy has a pinwheel shape made up of bright blue stars wound around a yellow-white hub of central stars. The hub has a slash of stars across it, called a bar. The galaxy is tilted face-on to our view from Earth. A slightly s-shaped white line across the top is a Hubble image is of an asteroid streaking across Hubble's view. It looks dashed because the image is a combination of several exposures of the asteroid flying by like a race car.
