Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Idol's season premiere! The premiere of Sam Levinson's new HBO series The Idol came with many surprises, including a brief cameo from Alexa Demie, who may or may not be reprising her role as Maddy Perez from Euphoria in The Idol. The Idol is a drama created by Euphoria's Sam Levinson and Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye. The show follows pop star Jocelyn as she returns to her singing career after a mental health crisis and enters a questionable relationship with a cult leader.
Like Levinson's hit series Euphoria, The Idol is full of graphic content, from nudity and profanity to substance use. The series does not shy away from being explicit, and in fact, this seems to be a major aspect of the show. The Idol focuses on these ideas and uses them to characterize Jocelyn and her unique life. In this way, despite The Idol's differences from Euphoria, the shows have major similarities and so it's unsurprising that another Levinson character may be making an appearance in this new series.
Alexa Demie's The Idol Episode 1 Cameo Explained
The Idol episode 1 set the tone for the rest of the series with many scenes showing the chaos and fun of celebrity life. Included in these moments was a scene in which Jocelyn and her entourage go to a nightclub where they dance, drink, and Jocelyn first meets Tedros, the owner of the club. During this scene, there's a brief shot in which Jocelyn's dancer, Dyanne, is seen dancing with a young girl, played by Alexa Demie. The moment is so short that there's no clear answer on who Demie is and why she's there, but Euphoria fans are sure to notice her.
At this point, there's no confirmation on whether Demie is supposed to be playing Maddy in The Idol. Not only was her cameo too short to provide any answers, the showrunners have also kept the information to themselves. While Demie was announced as part of The Idol cast and characters in Vulture, there has been no confirmation on who Demie's character is. Therefore, this leaves open the possibility that Demie could be Maddy, and either way, will likely return to the series in later episodes, hopefully to provide audiences with a clear answer.
How Euphoria & The Idol's Stories Can Still Be Connected
Despite lacking any information about Alexa Demie's role in The Idol apart from her episode 1 cameo, there are still some major connections the series makes to Euphoria. Namely, Sam Levinson revealed that The Idol and Euphoria are set in the same universe according to PopCrave. This means there's a significant chance that Demie is in fact Maddy. Furthermore, Euphoria season 3 is said to be making a time jump, which makes Maddy's appearance in the club make more sense as she would no longer be tied down by high school. In this way, Euphoria and The Idol are still firmly attached and become more so as time goes on.
All in all, Alexa Demie's cameo in The Idol was an exciting moment that definitely spurred many more questions that audiences will want answered. In the future, The Idol needs to confirm whether Demie is playing Maddy or if she has an entirely new character. Either way, Levinson's television series are certainly connected and will likely continue to prove this as more episodes are released.
