The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will begin widening U.S. 1/64 on Monday, January 17. This aggressive $58 million project, awarded to The Lane Construction Corporation, is anticipated to be completed in late 2006 and will widen U.S. 1/64 from south of the I-40 interchange to the Tryon Road interchange. Two lanes will remain open in each direction on U.S. 1/64 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekends. Construction To Begin January 17th. The project also includes improvements to the Cary Parkway and Walnut Street interchanges, the construction of a pedestrian bridge over U.S. 1/64 and a new Town of Cary gateway, with the Town of Cary contributing to the construction of the bridge and gateway.
Noise walls will be constructed near the U.S. 64 ramp to Tryon Road, from Tryon Road to the Kildaire Farm overpass, and from the Cary Parkway ramp to the Walnut Street ramp along the southbound lanes of the project. A noise wall will be constructed along the northbound lanes of the project in the vicinity of Wellington Ridge Condominiums between Cary Parkway and Walnut Street. Construction for the project will begin in the northbound lanes of U.S. 1/64, with nightly lane closures starting Monday, January 17 in preparations for a traffic shift.
The NCDOT will use smart work zone technology to inform motorists of current travel conditions. Smart work zones are equipped with sensors to detect traffic conditions and relay real-time information to message boards that will alert motorists of alternate routes and delays on the highway. Cameras also will be installed to monitor the flow of traffic. The NCDOT is using the Design-Build process for the widening of U.S. 1/64. Design-Build is a construction method that allows the NCDOT to award the design and construction of a project as part of one contract, which reduces the amount of time it takes to complete the project.
The NCDOT reminds motorists to stay alert in the U.S. 1/64 construction zone, obey the posted speed limit of 55 mph, be aware of construction workers and watch signs for construction information. The fine for speeding in the work zone is $250 and three drivers license points.
