That said, I like DOOM 2016 a bit better overall myself. In terms of story/atmosphere, DOOM 2016 > DOOM Eternal for "context"/story/lore -- really liked the "villain" in 2016 (they were arguably right depending on how you look at it and they were smart -- took steps to mitigate risk/etc). DOOM Eternal Lore is more like Diablo lore this time around seems to me.
Mechanically, there are also two things I'd consider "regressions" from 2016. In 2016, you could animation cancel melee between shotgun blasts for example so it was something I eventually got into muscle memory and I actually really liked being able to do with different guns/between abilities/etc. In Eternal though, melee has been changed so that it essentially "does nothing" unless you're using your "finisher" or the "blood punch" feature -- so, animation cancelling doesn't do anything since the melee does -- it seems -- 0 or close to 0 damage outside those circumstances.
Also, the chainsaw -- in 2016, on Nightmare/the harder difficulties you could strategically save the chainsaw for "bigger" threats/strategic difficult fights since it could be used on all enemies while in Eternal you can only chainsaw "basic" enemies and I actually hate that. Still, overall the game is still awesome and there are of course improvements in other areas and it runs really really well -- even totally maxed out at 1440p for me (though I do have a pretty beefy rig) -- like, zero stuttering and it's maybe the smoothest game I've ever played.
TL;DR: Game is excellent and I recommend playing it. Also, go play DOOM 2016! Game is a masterpiece you should definitely pick up and play too.… Expand
