| Marvel's M.O.D.O.K. |
Animation/Comedy | ||
| With Disney+ becoming the new TV home for Marvel, Hulu canceled most of the Marvel projects it had in the pipeline (or already on the air). But a pair of animated series remain at the streaming service, and up first is M.O.D.O.K., short for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, a large-headed, mid-tier supervillain facing difficulties in his professional and personal life voiced by Patton Oswalt. Oswalt is also a producer and co-creator of the series along with former Community writer Jordan Blum, so expect a comedic approach to the material—especially since the voice cast also features a number of comedic actors including Ben Schwartz, Sam Richardson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa Fumero, Beck Bennet, Jon Daly, Jon Hamm, Nathan Fillion, Bill Hader, and Whoopi Goldberg. | |||

Comedy | ||
| Comedians Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman create and star in this 10-episode comedy about two longtime friends struggling to get by in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood. (If that sounds familiar, it's because the Showtime series is adapted from the pair's award-winning 2017 digital series.) | |||

| Returning for a fourth season over a decade since it last aired, HBO's anthology series will now be led by Uzo Aduba, playing a Los Angeles-area therapist. She'll treat a group of patients played by Joel Kinnaman, Anthony Ramos, Liza Colón-Zayas, John Benjamin Hickey, and Quintessa Swindell. The season will consist of 24 episodes, with four episodes airing weekly (two on Sundays, two on Mondays). | |||
| Master of None Trailer | Comedy | ||
| Returning after a four-year hiatus, the Aziz Ansari- and Alan Yang-created comedy Master of None is one of Netflix's most critically acclaimed shows of all time, and has picked up numerous honors including three Emmy awards. One of those trophies came for a season 2 episode ("Thanksgiving") that centered not on Ansari's Dev but on his lesbian friend Denise (Lena Waithe), and it is the latter who will be the focus of this five-episode third season (subtitled "Moments in Love"), along with new co-star Naomi Ackie, who plays Denise's wife, Alicia. Waithe and Ansari co-wrote the season and the latter directed every episode, but will appear only briefly in the season. | |||

| Blame the pandemic. When HBO Max launched exactly one year ago, they weren't there for you. But now the cast of the 1990s NBC hit Friends (which some of you may know as the 2010s Netflix hit Friends) has finally reunited to celebrate themselves (and collect a tidy $2.5 million paycheck in the process). Joining Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer in the special are an eclectic group of celebrity fans and Friends guest stars including Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, David Beckham, Maggie Wheeler, James Corden, Elliott Gould, Mindy Kaling, Malala Yousafzai, and BTS. Don't worry: Gunther will be there too. (No word on Marcel, though.) | |||

| Receiving a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release (the latter, like Raya and the Last Dragon before it, will cost Disney+ subscribers an extra rental fee), Disney's latest live-action remake of one of its animated classics stars Emma Stone as 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil—a character previously portrayed by Glenn Close in two previous live-action remakes—in a prequel story set in 1970s London. (Expect a slightly less comedic and more adult take, given the film's rare-for-Disney PG-13 rating.) | Loki |
Drama/Comedy | Disney+ | |
| It's been a few months since the last one, so it must be time for a new Marvel series. Tom Hiddleston brings his big-screen God of Mischief to Disney+ in a series that finds Loki popping up at key moments throughout human history, where he becomes an unlikely influencer on events. Expect a comedic approach, especially since the series comes from frequent Dan Harmon collaborator Michael Waldron, who has written for Rick and Morty and Community, and director Kate Herron, who is new to Marvel and has worked on shows such as Netflix's Sex Education. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Owen Wilson, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Sophia Di Martino also star. Like Disney's other Marvel shows, Loki is technically a miniseries—and just six episodes at that—but that doesn't mean there can't be a second season. Episodes stream weekly on Wednesdays. | |||

Comedy/Drama | Apple TV+
| The pandemic may have deprived us of another season of GLOW this summer, but stepping in to fill the 1980s TV void is Apple's latest original. Physical stars Rose Byrne as "quietly tortured" San Diego housewife Sheila Rubin, who finds a unique path to empowerment: launching a VHS aerobics-instruction business. The 10-episode satire comes from Annie Weisman (who has written for The Bold Type and Desperate Housewives, among other credits) and also stars Rory Scovel (as Sheila's politician husband), Dierdre Friel, Paul Sparks, and Lou Taylor Pucci. | Abel Ferrara takes a deep (or shallow depending on your opinion of the director) dive into his own mind with this Jungian leap into the subconscious. In his fourth collaboration with Ferrara, following 4:44 Last Day on Earth, Pasolini, and Tommaso, Willem Dafoe plays Clint, a man who lives in an isolated cabin in the Siberian mountains before setting off on his dogsled to explore his own psyche. The result earned mixed reviews when the film debuted at the 2020 Berlinale. | |||

The focus here, obviously, is on Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow—though she's not the only Black Widow in the film, which finds Florence Pugh joining the MCU as Yelena Belova and Rachel Weisz possibly playing a third Black Widow (and also Iron Maiden/Melina Vostokoff). | One of the highlights of this year's (virtual) Sundance Film Festival, writer-director Dash Shaw’s five-years-in-the-making follow-up to My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea (another unconventional animated film) imagines a world where mythical creatures (or cryptids) have been rescued and housed in a zoo. Lauren (voiced by Lake Bell) has dedicated her life to sheltering them, but when she crosses paths with Amber, she begins to question her vision.
| Reminiscence |
Sci-fi/Thriller | HBO Max
| The debut feature from Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy is set in the near future—specifically, in a Miami that has been flooded by the effects of climate change—and stars Hugh Jackman as a scientist who helps clients re-live any memories they choose. (What could possibly go wrong?) Thandie Newton and Rebecca Ferguson also star. The film begins a one-month run on HBO Max today concurrent with its theatrical release. | |||

| The Chair |
Comedy/Drama | ||
| For their first series since Game of Thrones (and their subsequent signing of an enormous contract with Netflix), the production team of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have opted for something very different: a six-episode dramedy set within the English department of a fictional university. Killing Eve's Sandra Oh, playing the newly installed first female head of the department, heads a cast that also features Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Bob Balaban, David Morse, Nana Mensah, and Everly Carganilla. Actress Amanda Peet created the series (with Annie Julia-Wyman) and serves as showrunner—it's her debut in those roles—though she doesn't appear in the show. | |||

| The Nowhere Inn |
Drama/Comedy/Music | ($) Rent
| Also opening in theaters today, this 2020 Sundance entry from director Bill Benz (making his feature debut after work on such TV comedies as Portlandia and Kroll Show) blends multiple genres into a sort of indie-rock meta-mockumentary. The setup of Nowhere Inn has musician Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, hiring her (real-life) friend Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney and Portlandia fame to make a documentary about her tour. The through joke is that Clark is actually very boring when off-stage. At Sundance, critics generally liked the concept of the film but found it wearing a bit thin by the end of the movie. | |||

| The Many Saints of Newark |
Drama | HBO Max | |
| Rescheduled from March 2021 (and from fall 2020). David Chase returns to the world of his hit HBO series The Sopranos with this feature film prequel set in the late 1960s and '70s. Michael Gandolfini inherits the role of (a much younger) Tony Soprano from his late father, while Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Leslie Odom Jr., and Corey Stoll also star. Written by Chase and directed by fellow Sopranos vet Alan Taylor, the film begins a one-month run on HBO Max today concurrent with its theatrical release. | |||

| Diana: The Musical |
Musical | ||
| Filmed version of the new Broadway production (starring Jeanna de Waal as Princess Diana) was recorded without an audience last March as the pandemic forced the show to halt production just prior to its planned opening night. | |||
| Dune |
Sci-fi/Adventure | HBO Max
| Can director Denis Villeneuve succeed where David Lynch could not? The director of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival returns with his big-budget, highly-anticipated, and long-delayed (by covid) adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic, which Lynch previously tried to wrestle into a feature film in 1984 to less than spactular (though not uninteresting) results. Timothée Chalamet takes over the role of Paul Atreides originated by Kyle MacLachlan, while Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Stellan Skarsgård also star. The film will stream on HBO Max for one month beginning today (when it also opens in theaters), and a spinoff TV series called Dune: The Sisterhood will arrive on the same streaming service in the near future. | |||

Drama/Thriller | HBO Max
| Yet another WB release to stream for one month on HBO Max while in theaters, this adaptation of N. Richard Nash's 1975 novel has been a bit of a passion project for Clint Eastwood, who finally got a chance to direct the film after decades of interest. Eastwood also stars as a washed-up former rodeo star who jumps at a chance to make a quick buck by escorting a young man (played by Eduardo Minett) from Mexico back to his father in Texas. Expect plenty of lessons learned on their ensuing road trip. | |||
| SUN / November 28 | |||
| The Hot Zone: Anthrax |
Drama | Nat Geo, tbd | |
| Though the original Hot Zone miniseries was based on a single book (and a real-life incident), Nat Geo has turned it into an ongoing anthology series that will no longer have any connection to Richard Preston's best-seller. Instead, this second season is set amidst the mail-based anthrax attacks in the United States in the months following 9/11, and recounts the FBI's search for the suspect responsible. Tony Goldwyn, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Hamlin (playing anchorman Tom Brokaw), and Dylan Baker star in the six-hour series, which will air across three consecutive nights. | |||
