Glossary
Positive Result
A positive result indicates that SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in your sample. That means you are infected with the virus and are presumed to be contagious. A BU Healthway medical professional will inform you of your isolation obligations and ensure you have the healthcare you need.
A positive result may also indicate the presence of noninfectious viral genetic material that a person may continue to shed for up to 3 months post-infection, according to the CDC.
Negative Result
A negative test result means that SARS-CoV-2 RNA was not present in the specimen above the limit of detection. A negative result does not rule out the possibility of COVID-19 and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment or patient-management decisions. If COVID-19 is still suspected, based on exposure history together with other clinical findings, retesting should be considered.
Average Sample Processing Hours
The hours elapsed between when a sample is taken and when the results of testing on that sample are delivered to the Electronic Medical Record.
Currently in Isolation
The number of people in isolation while they recover from active coronavirus infection detected through testing at BU.
Tests
The total number of tests administered during the noted time period, regardless of whether one person received multiple tests.
Tests Positive
A percentage of positivity rate calculated by dividing the number of positive tests by the total number of tests administered in the same time period.
Individuals
The unique number of people receiving tests in the noted 7-day period. Depending on which test category a person is in, an individual may receive more than one test in a 7-day period, but they will be counted only once in this metric.
Individuals Positive
A percentage of positivity rate calculated by dividing the number of individuals who received a positive test result by the total number of individuals tested in the same time period.
Recovered
The term “recovered” indicates that a person has met the CDC’s criteria for leaving isolation and has been cleared to leave isolation by a BU Healthway medical professional. CDC guidelines state that at least 10 days must have passed since the onset of symptoms or the date of a positive test result; if the person in question had symptoms, they must be feeling improved for at least 24 hours, and they must have a normal temperature without the help of fever-reducing medicines.
