Robots can assist in safe clinical care, disease research and monitoring during a pandemic. But they can also help maintain other social or economic functions while people need to remain isolated. The field of social robotics explores using robots for education, mental healthcare, elder care and other applications, and could be critical for helping those who must remain isolated during pandemics like COVID-19.
Join roboticists Tony Belpaeme, Laurel Riek, and Brian Scassellati as they talk about how robots are being used during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the outbreak is changing the field.

Just weeks after the genome sequence of the recently emerged #coronavirus was published online, researchers reported the cryogenic electron microscopy structure of the spike protein the virus uses to gain entry to host cells in a 19 February Science paper (https://science.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/science.abb2507). The insights from their study are already helping to inform vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Earlier this week, as one example, the first human Phase I trial of an mRNA vaccine developed leveraging these findings began.
This Friday at 9am US ET, join coauthors of this study Jason McLellan and Barney Graham as they discuss how they visualized the spike protein, as well as how their work to improve understanding of SARS-CoV2 viral structure will inform therapeutics against this virus going forward.
