Why does human perception of time seem to vary across situations? How many times have you or a friend commented that the days seem to fly by now that you’re older? Laura L. Carstensen, Ph.D. and others have developed a Socioemotional Sensitivity Theory (SST) to help understand how humans monitor time and their own lifetime. Central to this theory is the idea of perceived time horizons (how much time is left on life) exerts a strong influence on motivation, goals, and preferences. The less time you perceive you have left to live, the faster time seems to go and the more humans tend to focus on activities that have emotional meaning and satisfaction. https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2018-31242-007.pdf #ThisIsNIH
