Let’s Prey: the second part of our video playthrough

Here’s the second and final part of my hour-long narrated playthrough of Bethesda and Arkane’s upcoming shooter-me-do, Prey [official site]. N.B. Contains spoilers for the opening hour of the game, but nothing beyond that.

Night in the Woods delayed … is out now!?!?!?

In a shocking turn of events, the colourful homecoming adventure Night in the Woods [official site] did not get delayed this week, causing it to become available on your PC mere hours ago. This is bad news for me. We’ve had our ‘Night in the Woods has been delayed again’ article ready to go for weeks, based on all the other times it’s been postponed, and now we’ve been totally blind-sided. That’s why this news piece is so late. I’ve had to re-write the whole thing from scratch.

Uurnog is a musical platformer from Knytt creator

I know an ‘Uurnog’ sounds like some gargantuan beast from Norse legend, but it’s not. Uurnog [official site] is really a newly announced, synthy, block-grabbing platformer from yer man Nifflas, aka Niklas Nygren, the creator of the Knytt series and NightSky among others. The aim in this one is to explore the world and “steal all the animals and keep them in the save room – the only place that doesn’t reset when you die.”

Wot I Think: Bucket Detective

How much of yourself would you sacrifice to create a literary masterpiece? Bucket Detective [official site], the new game from the creator of The Static Speaks My Name, is not interested in the answer to that question. Instead, it asks what you, in the role of forty-one year old man David Davids, will give up to write a trashy book that’s sure to get you laid. Since seeing each of the endings, the discovery of which is largely based on the answer to the question “how far will you go?”, I’ve settled on a single word that captures my feelings about Bucket Detective.

Grubby. It’s a grubby little thing, for better and for worse.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 creator reflects on reception, one year after release

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 [official site] came out one year ago and I never even noticed. It wasn’t an official release from Valve, for well-known reasons, but instead a player-made mod. Yet surprisingly, Episode 3: The Closure is not a fastidiously faithful extension of Valve’s world by super-serious fans. Instead, it plays fast and loose with Half-Life by introducing everything from Star Trek bits to cutscenes showing Gordon. In a hugely fascinating post, the mod’s creator has looked back on the (often furious) response from Half-Life fans and explained some of his curious decisions, all of which I adore. This has truly made my day. Read the rest of this entry »

Everything wrong with For Honor

The menage-a-trois of murder and mayhem that is For Honor [official site] does a lot of things very well. You can be down to your last sliver of health, limping across a bridge like a deflated balloon and you still might manage to grab a giant knight in panic and throw him off the ledge. Victory has never felt so dirty.

But its matchmaking is a toxic dumpster fire and its user menus are a bubonic plague of mistakes and dumbfounding decisions. How in the name of the Pope did so much trash get through testing? Here is a rundown of how an evening with this medieval swordfest might go, which handily doubles as a list of all the things Ubisoft needs to fix.

Strewth! Australia making Civ debut in next DLC

Australian will join Sid Meier’s globedwar for the first time in new DLC for Civilization 6 [official site], 2K have announced. WW2-era Prime Minister John Curtin will rise from the grave to lead them. Continuing the theme, 2K have also announced that the ‘Australian Summer’ update is “coming soon” to add neat-o features like official mod tools with Steam Workshop support and the option to play as teams in multiplayer.
