The IIAG is an annual statistical assessment of the quality of governance in every African country.

The value of the IIAG

The 2015 IIAG made up of 14 sub-categories, consisting of 93 indicators calculated using data from 33 independent, external data sources. It is the most comprehensive collection of data on African governance.

What is governance?

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation defines governance as the provision of the political, social and economic goods that any citizen has the right to expect from his or her state, and that any state has the responsibility to deliver to its citizens.

How does the IIAG work?

The IIAG provides data for every African country each year from 2000. Each country receives a score on a scale of 0-100 with the highest score showing the best performance. Countries are also ranked from 1-54 in each year. The data can be explored on our Data Portal or by downloading the data and insights.

What is the added value of the IIAG?

  • The diversity of data and sources used in its calculation convey the whole spectrum of governance.
  • Every component of the IIAG is comparable from the year 2000 enabling analysis of national and regional trends over time.
  • All underlying data of the IIAG are freely available and the process of calculating is fully transparent.

Advisory Council

The Advisory Council is a body of academics, policy-makers and private sector representatives, the majority of whom are African, whose specific expertise ensures that the IIAG is the most comprehensive, relevant and robust tool to measure African governance.
