Fundamentally, SDN is still mostly about network plumbing. While plumbing may
be useful to tinker with, what you can do with your plumbing is far more
intriguing. A rigid interpretation of SDN confines it to Layers 2 and 3, and
that's reasonable. But SDN opens opportunities for novel constructions in
Layers 4 to 7 that solve real operational problems in data centers. "Data
center," in fact, might become anachronistic - data is everywhere, constantly
on the move, seemingly always overflowing. Networks move data, but not all
networks are suitable for all data.

In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Steve Riley, Technical Leader in the
Office of the CTO at Riverbed Technology, discussed how finding (or building)
the right network, with the right applications, is still a labor-intensive
task. Must it always be this way? No: for networks will soo... (more)
Revisiting RAID Storage Remains Relevant and Resources
If RAID were really not relevant anymore (e.g., actually dead), why do some
people spend so much time trying to convince others that it is dead or to use
a different RAID level or enhanced RAID or beyond raid with related advanced
approaches?
When you hear RAID, what comes to mind?
A legacy monolithic storage system that supports narrow 4, 5 or 6 drive wide
stripe sets or a modern system support dozens of drives in a RAID group with
different options?
RAID means many things, likewise there are different implementations

Application Delivery is About to Go Hyper Hybrid
The market has embraced cloud.
Or has it?
A superficial reading of will tell you that the majority (a very big
majority) of those surveyed have, in fact, adopted cloud.
True.
But dig just beneath the surface and you'll likely find a very different
story. Sure, 80% (I made that number up but it's reasonable given all the
survey data) of customers have adopted cloud, but a much smaller percentage
of their apps have moved to the cloud.
For example, when we (as in the corporate We) asked organizations this summer
what percentage of a... (more)

How SDAS are Delivered - Converged Systems
The premise of cloud is based, like other emergent technologies, at least
partially on the notion of abstraction. Cloud providers are able to achieve
what appears to be boundless compute, limitless storage and never-ending
network capacity by being able to simply "plug and play" the hardware
necessary to expand capacity when needed. Enterprises, too, looking to
achieve similar capabilities are desirous of a means to achieve this level of
simplicity of scale.
And by desirous I mean "really, really, REALLY want" it. At least that's how

DevOps Is Even More Important Than You Think
The move in recent years to cloud computing services and architectures has
added significant pace to the application development and deployment
environment. When enterprise IT can spin up large computing instances in just
minutes, developers can also design and deploy in small time frames that were
unimaginable a few years ago. The consequent move toward lean, agile, and
fast development leads to the need for the development and operations sides
to work very closely together. Thus, DevOps becomes essential for any
ambitious enterprise... (more)
