Except they haven’t gotten more expensive at all…

Is it at all possible, especially considering the upcoming shift in ‘Pro’ focus to the iPad line (more on that in a second), that Apple is ready to kill off the iPad mini?

    Definitely not.

Oh, right, the millions upon millions of people who buy a Note or iPhone 6 Plus are just irrational…

    Criticizing Google is trolling, duh.

The fact that you can buy an LG G3 32 GB for $550 makes the iPhone 6+ and Note 4 a mega rip off at current prices.

No, that just makes the G3 a less valuable (and/or less desirable) device.

And Apple can afford to not lower prices because they sell. They adjust production according to sales patterns. iPhones are priced as the market will bear. I’m sorry you are upset about that (possibly because you cannot afford one?), but it’s not a rip off. If you buy one and feel it’s not worth what you paid, you can either return it for a full refund or resell it, possibly for a profit.

And you have the resell thing backwards; the resale values are higher because they are good products, not because Apple doesn’t do fire sales to dump stock.

I’m not sure how that qualifies as an attack.

It’s launch pricing dude its always a little inflated. Let the supply settle down and then see the price. The price I have quoted for the iPhone will remain the same until the new one comes next year.

The price for the iPhone will stay high for the exact same reasons the Note 4 price will drop; Supply & Demand. Price goes down on the Note 4 to move stock. Price stays up on the iPhone because it sells.

When you’re done crying a river, why don’t you climb down off your cross and use the wood to build a bridge to get over it.

Here is an idea, if you don’t like the price of a product, don’t buy it. Shocker!!

I’m not convinced they will, or ever need to, make a full tv, instead of a set top box.

I initially thought upgrades would be possible too, but the more I think about it, the more unlikely it seems. That would force Apple to limit themselves too much for backwards compatibility. They have largely moved away from upgrade-able internals in their products, very unlikely they change course here.

For a timepiece technically inferior to a $9 Casio.

Not sure if you’re talking about Rolex or Watch here; but pretty off base either way.

And disposable? No. But valuable for recycling or trade-in? Definitely.

It wasn’t an insult; being a tech nerd isn’t a denigrating statement. You still see it as just a smart watch, and no matter how much you want it to be that, because you have the tech perspective tunnel vision, that’s not what Apple is selling. They have never referred to it as a smart watch. It’s just a watch with more technology inside than other watches.

To expand on this a bit, I also don’t think it will be positioned as a timeless heirloom like a Rolex or Panerai or Glashuette, but more like a luxury, sort of utility, item like a Mercedes or home theater system. Something they spend money on, but upgrade regularly.

  • Comment

I don’t think that upgrade able insides are that likely. It forces Apple into some long term limitations I think they have no interest in doing to themselves. People threw a shit fit when Apple changed the dock connector after more than a decade. They don’t want to limit their ability to create new products in the watch line, and upgrade able internals would force them to maintain too much backwards compatibility.

Trade-ins seem much more likely. You get a reasonable market value of the precious metals and Apple simply recycles it to new raw materials for new products. Keep your bands, just trade-in/recycle the body.

Maybe that’s unnecessary altogether though. If Apple targets the very wealthy ($1m/year income) with the Edition line, a $20k watch every two years would be 1% of their income. Pretty much equivalent with what the middle class spends on upgrading their phones every year or two. Not a big stretch.

The problem that tech geeks have with this scenario is that they somehow imagine themselves being able to buy the $20K watch, and then somehow never wanting to spend that much again on one, and just be able to spend a couple hundred to upgrade it every year or two. It’s a result of them not being able to really fathom spending that amount on a purchase of that sort to begin with, so their long term outlook is tainted by that view.

Continuum isn’t comparable to continuity at all. All continuum does is change the primary input method and adjust the UI for it; with continuity I can freely move from device to device. They aren’t at all similar.

So out of touch with reality here.

Yeah, I’m just looking at it from the base perspective of how/where Apple is presenting this product; and you’re clearly stuck in the tech nerd mindset. I can’t think of any logical reason why Apple wouldn’t make it out of a comparable gold alloy. There is just no reason, based on their actions to this point, why they would ever just do a gold plate or similarly cheap solution.

They already have trade in programs for other products, why not the Watch? The "it’s too expensive" line is coming from the same type of "I can get a Moto almost 360 for $250" types; I’m with Gruber on this one, that nerd market just isn’t going to get the more expensive versions.

I would bet money on it not being anywhere near $999 for the Edition line. At least double that, I’d guess. Bear in mind that Apple wants this to be a fashion piece, and margins on watches are typically several times more than apple’s product margins; many high end watches have 500% margins, not 40%.

Pretty impossible to answer until it actually exists for the public.
