Rich Gannon, Steve Beuerlein and Chris Simms Discuss Nick Foles, Tom Brady and the Jets’ Quarterback Situation
Tonight’s episode of NFL MONDAY QB on CBS Sports Network (6:30 PM, ET) featured a recap of Week 5 of the NFL season, including discussion of the play of Nick Foles and Tom Brady, as well as Geno Smith, Michael Vick and the New York Jets. Host Adam Schein is joined on the show by NFL ON CBS quarterbacks Rich Gannon, Steve Beuerlein and Chris Simms. NFL MONDAY QB re-airs on CBS Sports Network tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, ET.
Following are excerpts from the show.
(ON NEW YORK JETS QB SITUATION):
Gannon: (Geno Smith) is an accident waiting to happen. He’s a turnover machine. He has 33 turnovers in 21 starts… Michael Vick has to practice and play to be effective. You can’t have this guy not take any reps during the week and expect him to be an effective player. I think the game has passed (Vick) by. It is a train wreck. It is a disaster right now in New York. With Marty Mornhinweg, Rex Ryan and these quarterbacks – it’s just not going to get any better. This is a bad situation that is only going to get worse.
Beuerlein: I blame all of this on John Idzik. Rex Ryan is trying to take the blame and deflect everything, but it is a lot deeper than just Geno Smith. There are a lot of problems with the Jets.
(ON TOM BRADY):
Beuerlein: He’s not even close to dead. We knew he was going to come back with a vengeance after that horrific performance the week before. The bottom line is, this guy came out ready to play. This offense was executing on all cylinders… This Tom Brady-led offense or Bill Belichick – whoever you want to give the credit to – the bottom line is that they adjust to the personnel that they have. They have always been the very best team at finding a new identity, whatever works the best.
(ON ANDY DALTON):
Beuerlein: Andy Dalton has not shown the ability yet in a big game to step up and lead his team the way he needs to. He still has a quarterback rating over 100. He has a team that is 4-1. They’re not dead yet by any stretch of the imagination. But in the big games, under the big spotlight, a lot of times on the road, you have to step up and carry your team the way that the great ones do. Dalton has not shown he has the ability to do that yet. I’m not giving up on him. But he has the big contract now. This team is his team. He has to step up this year.
(ON NICK FOLES):
Simms: I don’t trust his ability to throw the ball down the field with accuracy. He has had some real bone-head turnovers. To me, a lot of his success is predicated on their ability to run the ball. That is why we saw the success last year. They have not run the ball well this year and we’ve seen his play go down because of that.
Beuerlein: I am still trusting Nick Foles, but you can tell that I’m wavering a little bit. I’m not confident saying that whatsoever. (I called the Eagles game Week 1), and I was not impressed in their opening game against Jacksonville. (He has) five interceptions already this year. He only had two the whole season last year. He is not playing with the same confidence at the same level he played at last year. He has to turn this around. The Eagles are 4-1, but it is a very lucky and very fortunate 4-1. It is in spite of his poor play.
(ON THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL MATCHUP BETWEEN THE COLTS AND TEXANS):
Beuerlein: This is a huge game for control of that AFC South division. Both teams are going to be in the hunt all the way to the end. These are the two best teams. Andrew Luck is playing as well as anybody, if not better than anybody in the league. J.J. Watt – if you don’t have an answer for him up front, it doesn’t matter who you have pulling the trigger back there. Because he is going to make your day absolutely miserable. They have to account for J.J. Watt. If you do, Andrew Luck is going to have a good day against the Houston Texans.
Gannon: I like the Colts. Not because of the way Andrew Luck is playing, but the way their defense is playing. The defense has been outstanding over the last three weeks. The sacks are up and the run defense has been a lot better. That will be the difference in this one.
Simms: I believe that the Indianapolis Colts do win the game. The Houston Texans run defense – I have some questions about that. At the end of the day, I don’t think that the Houston Texans can score enough points to keep pace with the Indianapolis Colts.
