Titanfall Private Match details expanded in patch notes

Patch notes for Respawn Entertainment's first-person shooter, Titanfall, include more information on the first public test for the game's new Private Match mode. Respawn Entertainment announced the arrival of the mode earlier today on Twitter, which fulfills the developer's promises from March to add private matches. Private Match is a system used to organize tournaments or games against friends. It supports between two and 12 players and allows for one to six people per team. Players can open a Private Match lobby by selecting it from the game's main menu and inviting friends to join on any map or mode. "There is no XP gain, challenge progress, or achievement unlocking while in a Private Match," the patch notes reads. "For this beta, the last game summary screen will display what...

Watch Keiji Inafune design Mighty No. 9's robot enemies

The latest Kickstarter backer update for Comcept's Mighty No. 9 details the state of the game as well as what players can expect from the enemies and environments robot protagonist Beck will encounter on his journey. The grunt enemy robots, shown as sketches in previous updates, are undergoing additional polish and nearing their final forms, according to the update. The video above shows Inafune giving feedback on the humanoid-type enemy robot, which he noted should still be less human-like even though it is built like one. These upright standing robots, instead of holding shields and guns, have their shields integrated into their torso; when they need to use them, their torso rotates around to bring the shield from its back to the front of its body. The update also includes artwork...

Dragon Age: Inquisition won't have post-launch DLC party members

Dragon Age: Inquisition will not release additional party members as post-launch downloadable content due to the game's intimate treatment of companion characters — and because these add-on party members would need to be shipped on the disc, creative director Mike Laidlaw told OXM. Inquisition will include nine party members for players to choose from, six of which have already been announced: Cassandra, Iron Bull, Sera, Solas, Varric and Vivienne. Three more are on their way, with BioWare promising to reveal one each month. Laidlaw explained that more characters can't be randomly added to Inquisition due to the size and scope of the game and its heavy emphasis on relationships with companion characters. In order to make more characters available after the game's release, their data...

Titanfall patch coming today, adds private matches and more (update)

Respawn Entertainment plans to release a Titanfall patch today that will give users the ability to play private matches, the company announced on Twitter. Studio head Vince Zampella originally announced in early March that Respawn intended to add private matches with a post-release patch. "There's things that we want in the game that we didn't get to ship in the final game," he said. Today's update will also reduce the requirement for the Gen 5 challenge called "Gooser," which tasks players with killing 50 ejecting Pilots in mid-air, from 50 to five. Respawn announced the change late last month, saying, "We went a bit too far with this challenge, especially considering the unique conditions that have to be met in order to have the opportunity to get a kill on an ejecting Pilot."...

The Besties: The Best Games of March 2014

I hope you enjoyed March. The month full of big game releases may be the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. We can discuss its release on PC next month. April, after all, looks slim by comparison. Anyway, let's live in the now! This month we have four good games, a bag full of reader favorites and some big news involving a certain Lawnmower Man knockoff. 8:30 - Titanfall 25:00 - Mercenary Kings 37:00 - Halftime! 48:00 - Infamous: Second Son 1:14:00 - News of the month 1:24:00 - Luftrausers 1:34:40 - Reader emails Theme song by Ian Dorsch Get the show: Download MP3 Subscribe to the podcast...

The female gaze: how being watched affects your morality in adventure games

Telltale's The Wolf Among Us makes me nervous. Not because, as Bigby Wolf, I'm under scrutiny from my fellow Fables and constantly tensed for a fight. I just don't want to piss off the girl I like.Bigby charges his way through The Wolf Among Us, busting into taverns and apartments like a wrecking ball of angst and determination. Another character describes him as having "a hot head and a big heart," and she notes that this is a rather dangerous combination. Other characters tell him to man up and fix things — or stop getting involved and go away — in varying degrees, and they may change their mind as the story progresses. Bigby juggles these conflicts alongside a potential romance with a pragmatic and willful version of Snow White that could very easily fail. At the rate I'm...

Watch the folks from Gearbox and 2K Australia discuss the new Borderlands

Why Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a last-gen game developed outside of Gearbox

There's a new big Borderlands game coming this year, but it's not Borderlands 3 and franchise creator Gearbox Software isn't in the driver's seat.Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC this fall and is in development by 2K Australia. Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, met with journalists in New York this week to walk them through the upcoming game and explain why it won't be on next-gen platforms or made by the people who created the first two. Gearbox, Pitchford said, is a studio right now that very much wants to concentrate on building entirely new properties and creating "technology for the future." But the studio also still sees an unmet demand for more Borderlands by its most passionate fans. "The last quarterly report that Take-Two...

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z review: dirty rotten scoundrel

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has no real reason to exist. Every game needs to give the player a reason to continue. The combat may be satisfying, or perhaps the story ropes you in. It could be that the sense of exploration or discovery is enough to keep you in front of the screen. There has to be something the game provides the player, some sense of fulfillment that gives you an excuse to keep playing. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z offers no such reward; everything in the game's design and execution pushes the player away. The story is nonsensical. The characters are one-dimensional and off-putting. The combat is frustrating. The checkpoints are few and far between. The camera fights you as often as the enemies. The controls are a mushy, lumpy mess. The only emotion I felt upon...

Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer features a dire warning from Martha and the Vandellas

The latest trailer for Machinegames' alternate history first-person shooter, Wolfenstein: The New Order, shows the bleak result of global Nazi rule and the interminable struggle of a small but hopeful resistance movement fighting to overthrow the victor of World War II. It also shows that, under Reich rule, soccer officiating is just completely out of control. Wolfenstein's resistance, aided by series protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz, faces an uphill battle against the Nazi's machines of war, including bipedal mechs and robot dogs — that is, until the resistance gets some heavy duty machinery of its own. A sample of that heavily mechanized conflict is featured in the gameplay and cutscenes culled from Wolfenstein: The New Order in the trailer above. Wolfenstein: The New Order is slated...

Stanford engineers' Xbox 360 controller modification measures player engagement

In collaboration with Texas Instruments, Stanford engineers have modified an Xbox 360 controller to monitor a player's physiological signals to help determine if the player becomes bored. The prototype controller was based on research conducted at the lab of Gregory Kovacs, a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford. The controller measures heart rate, respiration rate, temperature and perspiration which are influenced by the autonomic nervous system, the part of the brain that undergoes changes when excitement, boredom, happiness or sadness is experienced. "You can see the expression of a person's autonomic nervous system in their heart rate and skin temperature and respiration rate, and by measuring those outputs, we can understand what's happening in the brain almost...
