Caught in the crosswalk: How molecular traffic lights guide cells and prevent health problems

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 3, 2014— Researchers at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech have discovered that cells respond to a molecular traffic light surprisingly slow, which enables chromosomes to split safely and create genetically identical daughter cells. Their work is published in the Feb. 27 issue of Current Biology.

The recent recipient of an NSF Early Career Award, Dr. Vullikanti is a Senior Research Associate in the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory at VBI. His current interests are at the interface of computer science and modeling and simulation of social and infrastructure systems of social and infrastructure systems, epidemiology, and mobile computing.
