The history of cartophily

Cartophily is the hobby of collecting cigarette cards, and a cartophilist is a person who collects cigarette cards.

Cigarette cards are collectable cards which were given away with cigarettes or cigars.  Many collections, however, are not limited to these alone and may include trade cards which were given away with other products such as tea or biscuits.

A broader definition of the hobby might extend to all types of collectable cards, including those which were not given away with a product, such as playing cards, telephone cards or customisable card games.

Some collectors also collect related products such as albums and cigarette packets.
