Reel Film, David Nusair
“Oswalt is nothing short of a revelation”
Drew McWeeny, Hit Fix
“Impressive in the writing, the directing, and the performances from all involved”
Kate Erbland, Box Office Magazine
“Fearless performance”
Juliann Garey, Marie Claire
“Hilarious dramedy”
Richard Corliss, TIME
“Theron is splendid”
Brad Barton, Fandango
“Young Adult is so wrong it’s right. A dark comedy that will have you laughing and cringing at the same time”
Kara Cutruzzula, Newsweek
“Theron is a comic force of nature”
Scott Mendelson, Huffington Post
“Bitingly witty performance”
David Ansen, Newsweek
“Director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, who made the huggable hit Juno, have reunited. Do not expect more of the same: this is a far more daring and prickly affair. Its narcissistic anti-heroine, Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron), sets off on a desperate mission to her hick hometown to win back her now-married high-school sweetheart, Buddy (Patrick Wilson). The movie's darkly funny heart, however, resides in the unexpected bond she forms with the wry, damaged nerd she looked down on in high school (Patton Oswalt). Theron, performing with whiplash bravura, has never been better or, paradoxically, more likable. You may think Mavis is headed toward redemption. To their great credit, Reitman and Cody have more subversive things in mind.”
Peter Debruge, Variety
“Deliberately prickly pic courageously risks offending audiences to arrive at a truth beyond its genre’s normal grasp”
Mark Adams, Screendaily
“Their latest collaboration is a delightfully dark comedy that blends self-aware sophistication with good old-fashioned comedy of embarrassment”
Steven Rea, The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Theron is one grand wretch in Young Adult”
Julie Hinds, Detroit Free Press
“Young Adult is a challenging dark comedy about a grown-up mean girl”
Stephen Whitty, Newark Star Ledger
“Twisted new comedy”
Richard Roeper
“With Juno, Up in the Air, and Young Adult, Jason Reitman has hit three home runs in a row. And the script from Diablo Cody has more depth and nearly as many laughs as her Oscar-winning screenplay for Juno. Everyone in the cast is excellent here, but it’s the gorgeous, mesmerizing, messed-up Charlize Theron who delivers one of the most impressive performances of the year in one of the very best movies of 2011. I give Young Adult an A”
Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com
“Theron is terrific, exuding a powerful, black-hole sexual chemistry as the boozy, unprincipled and profoundly unhappy Mavis Gary”
Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies
“Young Adult: Comedy served black, no sugar”
Eric Andersson, Us Weekly
“Charlize Theron delivers another Oscar-worthy performance”
Marshall Fine, Star
“This is a clever dark comedy, with Theron giving a startling and often hilarious performance”
Alynda Wheat, People
“Oswalt balances Theron’s tartness with a wry, bittersweet turn that gives heft to this dark comedy”
Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
“The one-of-a kind comedy”
Daniel Holloway, Backstage.com
“Theron and Oswalt make a perfect imperfect pair in Young Adult”
A.O. Scott, The New York Times
“Young Adult shrouds its brilliant, brave and breathtakingly cynical heart in the superficial blandness of commercial comedy”
Mick LaSalle, The San Francisco Chronicle
“5 out of 5 stars”
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
“3 and ½ stars”
Mick LaSalle, The San Francisco Chronicle
“5 out of 5 stars”
