Cuomo today announces new program to boosts farmers markets

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday the New York Fresh Connect Farmers' Markets (FreshConnect) program. It launches new farmers markets and expands others around the state by increasing the sale of locally-grown food.

Pizza throwdown showdown in Victor

Thirty-nine students from Wilson Commencement Park in Rochester went up against UNO’s own pizza chefs in a competition for the best the best deep dish pizza creation — and won.

Schumer: New York wines to reach stores faster

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer announced today that federal authorities have agreed to work with New York’s wineries to correct delays in the process of approving new labels for wine bottles, which had been hindering business.

Center showcases tastes from across New York

Visitors to the New York Wine and Culinary Center have plenty of ways to learn more about local food and wine. They can learn the best way to cook a steak, try local dishes at its restaurant and, of course, sample wine from all over the state.  

“We have a lot of people coming in to do one thing, and they end up doing another,” said Chris Barden, director of education at the center, which has received between 80,000 and 90,000 visitors a year since opening in 2006.

NY horse businesses get farm tax breaks

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a new law giving horseback riding and training operations the same tax breaks that horse breeding and boarding farms get.

Sponsors say the agricultural district protections and tax assessments apply to operations that have at least seven acres, stable 10 horses and gross at least $10,000 annually.

Canandaigua wine walk promotes local businesses

Trish said it was her first time doing the walk that promotes local businesses. She liked the variety of wine samples, she said, and visiting the shops.

At the wine walks, patrons grab a wine glass for $5 at any participating merchant, sample wines from Finger Lakes wineries and explore Canandaigua.

Green light for Walmart in Greece

After a nearly four-year delay, Walmart is building a supercenter in an upstate New York suburb.

The groundbreaking ceremony is planned for next Thursday in the Rochester suburb of Greece.

The town granted approval in 2007 for the retail giant to move ahead with a 146,000-square-foot store at Northgate Plaza. Construction was delayed by a series of legal challenges from two activist groups that were knocked down in 2009 and 2010.
