Willys wall catches fire, restaurant evacuated

The smell of smoke isn’t unusual for a barbecue restaurant, but not to the extent employees at Armadillo Willy’s in Los Altos encountered Thursday. The smell wasn’t coming from the smoker – it was from a fire. Photo of the damage here.

Elliott Burr/Town Crier A magically musical man: Los Altos resident shares tricks and tones with young and old

Irv Barowsky’s life today is far removed in years and distance from his childhood in Poland.

Even after World War II broke out in 1939, the then 10-year-old boy, his parents and siblings continued their everyday routine – until 1941.

Cloud-computing bellwether Box.net, currently based in Palo Alto, will pack a few boxes of its own before year’s end as it moves its growing headquarters into the Los Altos building that Rambus Inc. vacated in 2010.

After playing four sports in high school – including two in one season – it’s not hard to see why Teresa Fabbricino would have trouble naming her favorite.

“That’s a tough question,” said Fabbricino, Los Altos High’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year. “I’ve played soccer the longest, but field hockey is a really great sport, too.”

ELLIOTT BURR/TOWN CRIER CEO Carson says Silicon Valley foundation emerges from recession stronger than ever

Many Silicon Valley corporations would be satisfied to enter $150 million in income on their 2010 annual reports, but it is a local non-profit philanthropic organization that can claim that lucrative figure.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF), with $2 billion in assets and $1 billion in grants, mark its fifth anniversary this year. Created from the merger of two prominent foundations in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, SVCF’s continued success proves the consolidation was a good move. The foundation’s headquarters is only a stone’s throw from Los Altos city limits.

Realtors are stepping up efforts on yet another marketing platform – social media.

At the first in a series of presentations – Tech Trilogy – for members of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors held in Los Altos, Mary Pope-Handy, a realtor with Sereno Group, and Tim Hmelar, CEO and founder of Web Lunchbox, shared information with members on social media’s important role as a marketing tool.

Town Crier File Photo FHDA offers program with few cuts next year: Stability fund helps weather economic shortfalls

Foothill and De Anza college students won’t suffer the impact of state funding cutbacks next academic year, because district officials prepared for sizable reductions and are able to offset major cuts – for at least one year – with a stability fund.

After the state legislature adopted its budget last month, Foothill-De Anza Community College District officials had a better picture of what state cuts to expect, and the news was better than anticipated.

Eren Gknar/Special to the Town Crier Thursday Night Live : Coaxing crowds to Castro Street

Hoisting a Hula-Hoop onto her waist, Catherine Pereira tried to match her 3-year-old daughter Oriana’s effortless twirling. Oriana, blissful as she stood at the children’s activities table on cordoned-off Castro Street in downtown Mountain View, swung the 28-inch-round hoop without stopping.

Mom and daughter arrived downtown early, at 5 p.m. on a sunny Thursday, for what turned out to be a rocking community affair – the city’s fifth annual Thursday Night Live, co-sponsored by the Central Business Association (CBA).

Your Health
Elliott Burr/Town Crier Stacking the pack against smoking: ECH study assesses lung-cancer risk

For 33 years, Jennifer Martin smoked a pack of cigarettes each day and didn’t think twice about lighting up the stick that comes in a pack with nasty pictures and a dire warning to smokers of the havoc tobacco can wreak on human health. Working at El Camino Hospital’s nonsmoking campus in Mountain View didn’t make her think twice, either. Until three years ago.

Experiencing a deep heaviness in her chest, Martin suspected she had pneumonia and needed to get to a hospital.

The transcendent, inspirational power of music

Could it be possible? Was it some kind of mistake?

They were playing “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen over the Muzak background at Target. Only pop music historians and baby boomers can truly appreciate the shock.

EREN GKNAR/SPECIAL TO THE TOWN CRIER The Wild Coast Big Sur offers little pleasures

Big Sur has no official boundaries, according to Wikipedia. It covers a lot of territory, and not just geographically.

Diversity rules here, with some residents having lived for decades on family ranches, and others snapping up expensive real estate for summerhouses worth millions. The area’s isolation contributes to a sense of community among locals, many of whom become volunteer firefighters to protect Big Sur’s natural beauty.
