Welcome to iboum.com, a site documenting the shift towards fully digital entertainment for the home.

2008
WDTV
An early player

We are in the midst of a revolution in home entertainment. The old technologies of CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, and broadcast TV are on the way out. The future will see all media content stored digitally and made available on-demand. This site is about products providing digital entertainment to the home, so called 'Media Players'.

With the rapid proliferation of digital media, the question soon arises of how best to enjoy it all? Media Players allow you to experience digital movies, TV, music, and photos in simple comfort in your front room. No fiddling with cables between the PC and the TV, no huddling around a tiny laptop monitor, no transcoding files to make then play on a games console, just straightforward HD entertainment for your home.

2010
Apple TV
Paid streaming

As of late 2010, major consumer electronics companies are starting to release Media Players. This has led to a split between the traditional products that will play anything (e.g. MKV, DVD-ISO, Blu-Ray ISO) but lack paid on-demand content (e.g. Dune H1, Popcorn Hour A210), and mass-market products that limit file format support but offer lots of paid on-demand paid content (e.g. Apple TV, Google TV). We believe that a reconciliation of the two approaches is ultimately necessary, but we cover both.

Our aim is to catalogue the developing global Media Player marketplace. Over the past year more than 150 Media Players have been launched at prices from $30 to $500. All are covered in detail on this site with easy searching / filtering by feature. Our product pages offer a simplified and sortable product database maintained by us to be accurate and concise. Every page allows comments and we encourage user feedback and ratings.

Click on 'HD Media Players' in our menu bar to get an index of every HD Media Player ever made. Current combined rating top four players (updated daily according to user votes):
