'Learning in the Bush' at Garma  10 Aug 2010
Garma, the annual Indigenous cultural festival in Arnhem Land winds up today. This year's theme was ‘Indigenous Education and Training’ and acting Chief Executive DET Kevin Gillan was the keynote speaker at a forum on improving Indigenous Education. Mr Gillan’s presentation underscored the importance of attendance in improving education outcomes and was well received by a packed house. DET was out at Garma in force over the Festival weekend, showcasing the latest in mobile learning units. Taminmin College’s new hospitality training van was the centrepiece of the ‘Learning in the Bush’ precinct, itself a collaboration between DET, CDU, SITAC, IS Australia and the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Also in the precinct, the DET Families as First Teachers team set up a family photo booth and the Fred Hollows Foundation promoted its new cookbook for remote communities kukumbat gudwan daga (Really cooking good food). See SITAC’s Twitter updates and a DET Director Training Services, Roger Bryett’s video blog for more.
