'Do players care about graphics?' - Bulletstorm dev

"We really do not care that much," says developer of gorgeous-looking game

Bulletstorm developer, People Can Fly has questioned whether players actually give a monkey's about graphics any more.

Speaking to CVG, founder Adrian Chmielarz said he doesn't really care about video game visuals that much - so it's really lucky that his shooter looks fantastically good.

"The thing is, we really do not care that much," he said of game graphics. "When you take a look at the visual quality of Gears - the density of detail, so to speak - in my opinion, it kills Modern Warfare easily. But, Modern Warfare is 60 frames-per-second, and composition of the scene in Modern Warfare is really, really good. It's excellent.

"I think right now so long as the game has a minimum level of quality, which is for us and everyone who wants to matter in this business is really high, do players really care? Seriously, if it really looks good, do we need to join race?

He added: "If people say our game looks better than another game, we will be happy, but that's not our goal. We just want to invite you on an adventure."

Bulletstorm, in case you missed it, is a Cliff Bleszinski-produced shooter in which you can impale people on giant, spike wielding plants, slide kick bizarre-looking guards, and in which a man can exclaim, "You scared the dick off me!" when he feels like it.

Cliffy B recently stuck up a six minute walkthrough video of the game in action. Watch it.

No, Uncharted is good because it's a great game. The good graphics are just a bonus.

As they always should be.
altitude2k on 2 Jul '10
I'm tempted to say artwork and environment design is more important than the actually graphics of a game.
gothchild on 2 Jul '10
i play snes chrono trigger,FFVI and super mario kart to this day. all 3 are better than their modern counterparts.

graphics are last in line. the fundamentals have to be in place first.

if graphics truly mattered: FFXIII would have murdered chrono trigger in the reviews. it didn't.

This.

Gameplay always comes first. Graphics are just the icing on the cake.

If the gameplay sucks then the best graphics in the world couldn't save it.

no course not

we just waste hundreds of pounds on xboxes and ps3's
so we can still play pacman and space invaders in hd
chamony on 2 Jul '10
For me it depends of the game genre.

If it's a FPS or sports game then the graphics are high on my list of reasons to buy, if not top, however, if it's a strategy game, sandbox or MMO, it's not as important as hopefully the atmosphere and gameplay will make up for the lack of graphical porn, but I do think that anyone who says that graphics aren't up there in importance are being disingenuous.

um PC gamer please ill just lay down a little defense for poor old crysis because this is the normal area some one will slate it

Crysis is a great game which sadly not enough people get to play while the graphics are soo epic the game play is really open and amusing when fighting humans by toying with them while the aliens offer a great change of pace a environment change (yes that was almost a summery review)

uncharted is not good its just cinematic game like heavy rain but different style (just because someone thinks a large quantity of sony exclusive games are s**t doesn't mean their a fan boy you fanboy)

In fact, I think my least favourite part of UC2 was on top of the museum in Turkey where Flynn says, "stop staring at the view" or words to that effect.

Does the pope $hit in the woods and is the bear Catholic?

Im a Graphics whore, I love to see the enhancements, after playing for 30 years.

However the game on its on can not purely rely on it, if it plays or runs like a bag of nails!

Haha, you've got to be kidding me!? The alien combat was incredibly tedious! I wouldn't criticise Crysis for being too focused with the graphics (I ran it on High on PC), since the gameplay was fun and strategic against the Korean soldiers. My criticism is that the game took a sharp nose dive into mediocrity when the space jellyfish got there.
gothchild on 2 Jul '10
As far as graphics go a game SOULD HAVE ANTI-ALIASING!!!!

cause when it doesnt it looks soo bad i want to kill the guy who made it
Skill_Machine on 2 Jul '10
Exceptional graphics can add a lot to the experience and poor graphics can be distracting. It's not everything, (one of my favorite game is nethack) but they obviously are important in a visual medium.
KippDynamite on 2 Jul '10
It's funny Crysis got mentioned. It clearly shows how important gameplay is. The entire game is in the same place, the graphics are pretty much the same, yet at the very moment the gameplay started to suck, the game became boring, despite it being as beautifful as before.

So yeah visual quality will help a good game, but not make it. Anyone thinking otherwise- go watch Avatar.
Ominous on 2 Jul '10
do people care about graphics?

of course! its what makes the first impression when new games are being previewed. if the game's graphics looks sh1t, the majority would lose interest and wouldnt bother following it.

HOWEVER, yes, gameplay comes FIRST.
slaney on 2 Jul '10
Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 are both fantastic games in my opinion. Both have great graphics and Uncharted's atmosphere is incredible. Also the gunplay in both games are some of the best this generation(Killzone 2 may be disputable but works for me). Have you completed these games and had a online session?

For me graphics are more than just superficial as they give the experience credibility and makes for a more immersive experience. Having said that gameplay will always come first... no point having a Rolls Royce that drives like a Robin Reliant.
chunkyboymania on 2 Jul '10
when i buy a game, in the first hours i am most impressed by the graphics and the story but after a couple of hours, graphics become less important. still, uncharted would be nothing without the drama and atmosphere the graphics create and i bet killzone would just be another shooter without its visuals (the story and multiplayer are average in my opinion).
themozabeast on 2 Jul '10
all i can add is anyone who says uncharted series has a good story hasn't watched firefly or serenity (epic series)

to be honest uncharted is the same thing as avatar visually good action good but steals tones
weker on 2 Jul '10
finally, something i want to discuss, game play > graphics, while in the case of most ps3 and pc exclusives they have the capabilities for both and that is great while other games sacrifice gameplay for graphics such as mass effect and splinter cell conviction. but even if alan wake and uncharted 2 looked like last gen games, i would still love them. also you have to distinguish between good graphics and art, such as okami or the scenery in uncharted, both considered art.
rogueybear on 2 Jul '10
A bit harsh to compare Uncharted to 14 part TV series in terms of storyline I think. It's a bit like me saying whoever thinks Firefly has good gameplay hasn't played Dig Dug.

At least keep with in the same medium. Snatcher, Heavy Rain or Final Fantasy 7 would have been better examples.
chunkyboymania on 2 Jul '10
Yeah, i wouldn't be playing Batman AA, Dirt 2 ,etc, at 60+ fps, native 1080p, etc on PC if i didn't care about graphics..

Not being f**king funny mate but Crysis was a load of s**t, it was poorly f**king done and the storyline was full of b******s.

It ran like s**t even on a decent gaming rig, I found it dire.

Though modding capabilities was nice with the map editor and such but the game was useless.

PC Gamer myself and I do own a PS3 due to some exclusives but majority of the games aren't as nice on the PS3 due to the developer being bone-idle to put in the effort and time into the PS3 versions - Uncharted 2 was a nice game, it had some nice visiuals but it wasn't perfect of course this was an exclusive and was one of the best visualised games on the PS3 at the time and all exclusives tend to look gorgeous.

I love gaming on the PC but games are poorly constructed and are a bit unoptimised but thats due to the trends of different machines, since theres a loads of computer specifications its harder to develop a decent game for that platform.

Personally I do like my graphics but other factors which I would consider over graphics which are;

Storyline <- Highest Priority.
Gameplay
Mechanics
Graphics <- Lowest Priority.

And its wrong that some of prats who post on this forum compare games with a tv series, shame on you.
ChunkyMonkey on 3 Jul '10
I used to play a lot of games on my pc, then i got fed up forking out hundreds for a decent graphics card far to often for my liking. That what made me get a console years ago. And we all know without a decent graphics card on a pc games look s**t.
anytime on 3 Jul '10
Fallout 3 and The Witcher are too examples of games that do not have impressive graphic engines or animations but really suck you in and have a lot of replay value.

I would still love Crysis if it didn't have impressive visuals (actually I've never played it maxed out). It's one of the fps's I've replayed the most in my life next to Half Life.
Dandelion on 3 Jul '10
I agree with the dev; provided a certain minimum threshold is achieved, it is acceptable, and anything above that is simply a bonus.

Given all the Crysis talk, I'm going to have to throw in my two cents Razz. I bought the game when I upgraded my PC, more or less to put it through its paces. However, I found that I truly did love the game, up to the point where it shifted from koreans to aliens. The first few hours of it were awesome, it just fell to bits when they threw the aliens in as the main foe. Before that point, it was one of the more inventive and interesting shooters I'd played since, as someone else said, Half-Life 2. I'm not suggesting it matched HL2, not by a long shot, but still, I enjoyed it. It was 'fun'.

I'm disappointed that the sequel has gone down the alien route, though, continuing what the original did crappily rather than what it did well Sad.

Graphics do factor in soem games - FPS primarily.

However the games I like mostly are games with lots of playability - long lasting games.

Like Civ 5 which i'll be getting has hexes for god sake Very Happy

Oh also have a PS3 for exclusives and certain games (racers, 3rd person games).

As stated in the article,my preference after gameplay is framerate.I did think that by this generation with its multi core processors that we would see all games running at 60 fps.It appears that some developers push the graphics to a degrre that the framerate suffers.I do know a few people that can't really differentiate between 30 and 60 fps but to me the increased smoothness it creates really adds to the gameplay.
GoatBoyUK on 3 Jul '10
The way a game looks can have a huge impact on your immersion in a game, but art style and graphics are different things. I still play a lot of old games despite the bad graphics because the game play is good, and Ive found that its not really changed or improved much even in the modern games. Performance is also very important, most competitive FPS players will turn down graphics to get the game performing better.

I dare say some people will judge by graphics alone on whether or not to buy a game. For example, a lot of people criticise Bioware games because the graphics arent as good as they could be, but yet theyve created some of my favourite games of all time. Then I was also told to try out Crysis because of how pretty it looked and I was left incredibly disappointed. However, because most FPS contain similar game-play, graphics have mostly been the only way for them to compete and stand out against the crowd, (tbh, so many are produced now it takes a lot for one to grab my attention.)

Also, the power capabilities of the new consoles arent just for pumping out pretty graphics, its also for processing commands faster (such as dealing with player input, updating A.I., generating better physics and running more ambitious algorithms.)
sgspacemonkey on 3 Jul '10
I don't think they should be saying gears is the best looking anything when it comes to visuals technically, it's more about the art style which some like and some hate. Art style is arguably more important when it comes to visuals and yes it is super important. Is music important in a song or only the lyrics? It sure is when you're into edm but that's not the point. Sure this is probably the worst analogy you will ever hear but you should get the picture. It heightens the immersion/enjoyment and shows that the medium is advancing in at least one aspect. That is very important.

Hey, if you're a dev and want to find out the answer make the most amazing game with awesome visuals from the 90's and see if it sells.

I also can't believe someone can say uncharted 2 is crap. It does have a few limitations such as linearity but come on, if that's really a problem then you must think 99% or more of games are terrible. What's so bad about it? The story? Man you get a good story in a game once in a blue moon.

As for crysis, I really liked the change of pace when you started to fight the aliens. Sure it wasn't as open ended as the 1st half of the game and at the start it did kind of suck but it was all good when it pretty much went into full on "blowing s**t up mode". Hey I'd bet that if it was the same thing throughout then you would get people bitching about it not have any variety. But yes, the vtol section was horrendous.
Sleepaphobic on 3 Jul '10
@weker - Xbox 1 barley had any games, they were either crap or better alternatives on the ps2 or were on the ps2 as well...that list you made I almost fell asleep reading...oh thats why Xbox 1 focused on online because that was the only thing they could do...ps2 was about games games and more games, online was also there but it was more of a bonus or afterthought because gameplay went first...sorry if that sounded abit fanboyish but I had to get that off my chest.
thedriffter50 on 3 Jul '10
lots of people do unfortunately Sad

real gamers don't as they know game-play is much more important than graphics Smile
alan666 on 3 Jul '10
Of course graphics matter, and in a very big way too. I want Uncharted to look the way it does, as I do Gears of War, Gran Turismo, Killzone, God of War, Crysis, Alan Wake etc etc, I dont think I'd play half of these games if the graphics were average.

Don't get me wrong, the gameplay has to match and exceed expectations but it's hard to be pleased with your full price purchase if it doesnt on your shiny new next gen HD systm if it doesnt make you fumble aimlessly on the floor feeling for your jaw.

In fact, to back up this point - Halo, Gears and Killzone are pretty generic shooters really (let's face it, they're hardly Half-Life, Fallout or Bio Shock) but the graphics have actually drawn us into their glorious worlds of destruction (I don't think such destruction is glorious in real life though) and added to their playability and I hope the trend continues.

I can't wait to see Halo Reach, Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 all bigging each other up, oh and all should play well too!
starsail on 3 Jul '10
@thedrifter "@weker - Xbox 1 barley had any games, they were either crap or better alternatives on the ps2 or were on the ps2 as well...that list you made I almost fell asleep reading..." if you had bothered to actually read it then you would have noticed that many of the games on there are all time classics which only makes my question more interesting what "better alternatives on the ps2" are there? most of the biggest games are all eastern as well which inst as good for everyone (although not me)

P.S while you comment does sound fanboy ish due to the quoted bits ill just add i was mostly a Nintendo gamer anyway

Yeah but I reckon Megadrive had more triple AAA titles than the SNES. If you disagree your just a graphics whore and statistically a paedophile.

@ weker

Where did this giant dick come from??
Laughing

Sup man.. i dont get your point.. firstly let me just state im a pc gamer myself.. and to bring up crysis is a really good point.. because its one of those games that looks great and plays great too.. but what i dont get is on what logic are u bashing uncharted 2.. graphics? Its one of the best looking games on the ps3.. not just because its technically superior than the competition on consoles but more because its got a great art style going for it.. which crysis does not have.. Crysis is the game thats come closest to lookin like real and guess what.. Laughing its a cosmos away from being REAL real.. my reality is much more beautiful than crysis.. so epic fail there.. that being said its a technically mind boggling game but only for people who will appreciate really high resolution textured ROCKS and BOULDERS and foliage.. etc.. and i love all that.. no game can beat it at that.. but guess what.. when ur running a game on a system that CAN run crysis at its full glory then its sorta OBVIOUS the game is supposed to look that good.. INFACT its supposed to look better but it doesnt because its IMO the least optimized game EVER.. FAILED there again..

So uncharted's story is not "good" by your standards rite? But weker.. crysis's story is the dumbest thing ive ever gone thru.. worse than a B movie.. And if u want to compare uncharted's story to anything compare it with story's of other video games.. not some series.. or some book.. or some novel... or some movie..thats not how comparisons go.. No one was blown away by uncharteds story.. but it managed to keep the gamer well engaged in a cinematic experience like no other IN A VIDEOGAME.. and thats whats made it popular.. coz its an interactive movie..

Which crysis is not.. its a bunch of lvls stringed together by many loading sequences.. with a craptacular story and pretty unnecessary cast of characters.

And from what i saw crysis 2 is striving for that cinematic experience.. Most games are being compared to or trying to upstage uncharted because its created a new standard.. out of an OLD-as-time itself genre.. Its nothing new.. but in recent times no other has done it better..

The odd thing is every pc gamer ive met who loves crysis have been able to appreciate uncharted and the rest of sony's exclusives as well.. because pc gamers have always been and still are more obsessed bout greater quality textures than anything else. Because when a game can squeeze the most out of their expensively invested rig.. it becomes worth it. Just like the ps3.. the exclusives are gettin the most out of the machine with each upcoming game.. and the graphics are getting better.. so each new game is like a new crysis of a different genre for ps3 owners.. and thats something the pc gamers can relate to.. ur just some sore hater.

I'll tell u this.. a game like killzone 2 is technically more superior to crysis considering the specification of the platform its being run on versus a pc with specifications sufficient enough to run crysis on MEDIUM.. and still killzone 2 will beat it because ART style > GRAPHICS.. always and forever. Laughing

And to finish this off.. the pc will remain the greatest most open platform EVER with some of the greatest games.. its also the platform taken least advantage of.
eye.of.despair on 3 Jul '10
"because pc gamers have always been and still are more obsessed bout greater quality textures than anything else. Because when a game can squeeze the most out of their expensively invested rig.. it becomes worth it." lol what?

ill just say most pc gamers play games on much lower graphics then they can to play the PC games ill refer to games like battlefield for that and also ill just say their most popular games are made by valve which i sure isn't that graphically powerful compared to many other titles

ill just add on to that dont forget that pc gaming is where indie games are most supported so i think i can say that the quoted bit above is not right

for your crysis bit your opinion, i liked the way crysis played out i found all of it fun altho the ending dropping off a bit but what doesn't

and just to say on top of it because i played thro crysis on a 32 bit setting and on a lower resolution and i still loved i have replayed on almost full and still liked it i found it way more re playable then loads of games because for once it wasn't 100% linear

ill also add killzone while it does have use its specs well it does layer a load of motion blur to cover up most the bad stuff there is a developer diary some where look for it and you will see
weker on 3 Jul '10

gramreaper666 on 4 Jul '10
@weker - then why are you bragging about the xbox then ? To be honest at times Gamecube had equal or even better graphics then Xbox which really makes Xbox 1 one of the worst consoles ever IMO.

'' The graphics on PS3/360 are about as good as most people need them to be, so anything more would be wasted, just give us better game play and plot now ''

Thats one of the best things I've heard in gaming, why are developers these days so determined to increase the graphics further when they are already good ? In my opinion I think we can live with Uncharted 2 - Heavy Rain graphics for a very long time so now of all times developers should put more thought in the gameplay.
thedriffter50 on 4 Jul '10
They only want to increase the graphics cos really, they can't do anything else since they are so narrow minded. This is why the Xbollox is the console that these devs favour because they can't do anything else. The Wii is the console that shows how inadequate devs are (and even then they can't make it do good graphics!). I just don't get how people can't see this

thedriffter50 made a good comment in the "State of decline" regarding graphics and devs.
JuiKuen on 4 Jul '10
Agree 100% - Graphics & Sound do not make a good game. Look at all the turkeys that look gorgeous. Admittedly I may be biased towarda gameplay over graphics as I grew up in the ZX Spectum/C64 era and graphics were definitely not what brought you back to those games. That's what really hacks me off about the negative reviews of Modern Warfare on Wii. OK Graphics aren't up to PS3 standard but the gameplay is amazing. Add it's not as if they're that bad - I mean it hardly looks like Wolfenstein.
shuggybarr on 4 Jul '10
I would take Par Graphics and superb gameplay over par gameplay and superb graphics.
