Savvy hotel shopping online for a great hotel rate now requires some searching and comparing. A hotel's published price — its "brochure" or "rack" rate — is usually the maximum that it charges. There are no special discounts applied to the rack rate and it is generally what you will be quoted by the hotel's reservation system. As for the discounters, no single booking site delivers the lowest hotel price each and every time. Why? To level out the ups & downs of the travel market and to guarantee a minimum level of revenue, some portion of a hotel's total available rooms may be sold in blocks to the discounters well in advance. In fact, the hotel may sell different blocks at different times at different bid prices to several discounters! Hotels now also recognize that they may need to compete against the blocks they (and their competitors) pre-sold and offer their own promotions and package deals. Discounters also know the travel market well and may raise their rates when demand increases. Finally, participation in pre-selling varies greatly from hotel to hotel. Some hotels, even some hotel chains, only occasionally pre-sell their rooms, if at all. In short, plan to check the hotel's site and the discounters.
Peak Season: This also means is that you can sometimes find a room at a busy time or in the peak season when the hotel tells you they are sold out by booking through a discounter. They may still have a room available in their pre-purchased block.
