Environmental Benefits

The consumer electronics and general lighting industries are working diligently to reduce the impact of their products on the environment.  At Luminus, we are proud to contribute to this initiative with PhlatLight LEDs making a better, greener world by reducing power consumption and reducing the amount of hazardous waste entering the environment.

PhlatLight Reduces Power Consumption

In consumer electronics, projection products using PhlatLight LEDs use far less power than comparable products illuminated by mercury-arc, high intensity discharge, or halogen lamps, which means they help to reduce air pollution from carbon emissions.

Environmental Highlight: Large Screen TVs

Projection TV (PTV) products, such as the Samsungs DLP PTVs, illuminated by PhlatLight LEDs, consume substantially less power than comparably-sized LCD or plasma TVs, saving energy and reducing air pollution from carbon emissions.   This advantage increases with the screen size.

The Micro Device Display Consortium estimates that under typical use, this efficiency can save consumers over $100 per household per year in electric bills.  And if all other large screen TVs energy consumption were reduced to the level of a PhlatLight-based PTV, wed save 444 billion KWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by 5.2 million tons a year, roughly the carbon footprint of 1 million cars.

Environmental Highlight: Portable Projectors

Portable projectors are a class of projectors weighing under four pounds.  A new class of portable projector now available is the LG Electronics HS-101 Ultra-Portable Projector, using PhlatLight LEDs instead of the usual mercury-arc lamp.  PhlatLight allows the HS-101 to be a smaller, lighter, quieter more versatile product, and when compared to the average power consumption of ten popular lamp based portable projectors, the HS101 consumes 60% less power.

PhlatLight Helps To Reduce Hazardous Waste

All PhlatLight products manufactured by Luminus are RoHS compliant and 100% free of hazardous materials, including lead and mercury.

High intensity mercury arc lamps used in video projection, such as those in PTVs or front projectors, contain between 10 to 50mg of mercury.  PTV lamps fade during their life and eventually burn out, requiring replacement every 2,000 to 6,000 hours.  When the lamps in these products are replaced or the product is discarded at the end of its life, it must be discarded in an environmentally safe manner to avoid contaminating the environment.

With millions of PTVs and projectors sold each year and millions of lamps replaced, the use of PhlatLight in these products reduces hazardous waste and overall ownership costs..
