Endeavors Technologies Application Jukebox: An interesting spin on application virtualization
Endeavors Technologies just launched its Application Jukebox, an application virtualization and delivery product. It appears to me that this product takes the concepts of application encapsulation and application streaming to a new level.

Provision Network’s view of desktop virtualization
Paul Ghostine, Vice President/General Manager of Quest’s Provision Networks Division, and I had a chance to catch up on a number of things centering on the concept of desktop virtualization and what is really needed to give people the experience of having their own dedicated desktop device while also giving administrators what they want; a secure, well-managed, reliable environment. I always enjoy my short discussions with Paul. He has a wealth of knowledge of what’s going on in the industry and has a clear idea of where his company needs to go to bring more organizations over to the concept that deploying full featured desktop systems everywhere is no longer the best way to provide computing power for staff members. VirtualLogix VLX for Network Infrastructure v3.0 Supports Windows
Virtual machine technology has many uses. Most are familiar with using this technology to create virtual servers. Some are familiar with how virtual machine software combined with connection brokers or virtual access software can be used to create virtual clients or desktops. Few are knowledgeable when it comes to the use of virtual machine software in embedded environments. VirtualLogix is a company working in that rarified air. The company recently announced VLX for Network Infrastructure v3.0 that promises to “blend the rich Windows® environment with the existing capabilities of real-time operating systems (RTOS) or Linux by applying real-time virtualization technology on platforms using multi-core processors.”

Citrix and NetApp Do the Virtualization Dance Together
I see that Citrix and NetApp have gotten together to provide a virtual processing/virtual storage solution. As I mentioned in the post The dynamic duo of virtual storage and virtual processing, virtual processing and virtual storage are powerful separately but, using them ought to be part of most organization’s virtualized IT infrastructure. Appistry Open Distribution Not Open Source
Appistry’s Sam Charrington (Vice President of Product Management & Marketing) and I enjoyed a long chat about the companies newest marketing move, giving software away to develop a broad developer community. Since I have seen this done before, I wanted to know more about what the company was doing besides “throwing the software over the wall in the hopes that someone would catch it.” It appears that Appistry has learned from the mistakes made by Borland, Computer Assocates, Sun and others before trying to assemble such a program. I learned that Appistry is doing quite a bit more.

Marathon Technologies launches everRun VM
I recently spoke with a couple of folks from Marathon Technologies, Steve Keilen, VP of Marketing, and Michael Bilancieri Director of Products, about a new product they were launching everRun VM. I’ve posted about Marathon a couple of times in the past. For those interested in a trip down memory lane, its time to get out the milk and cookies, put another log on the fire and look at my earlier posts Conversation with Marathon Technology and Marathon Technologies launches everRun CDP. The company has developed a very interesting, quite comprehensive and technically challenging approach to gaining control of both physical and virtual systems in order to provide high levels of availability and reliability while also allowing a detailed understanding of what’s actually happening inside of those resources.

Ceedo: Application Virtualization for the Desktop
Dror Gill, Chief Strategy Officer of Ceedo Technologies Ltd. and I played an exciting round of Email tag a few weeks ago. Ceedo presents its technology as “portable desktop virtualiztion.” What does that mean? Well, my posts Just what is “desktop virtualization” anyway?, The Role Application Virtualization Plays in Desktop Virtualization, and Processing virtualization and desktop virtualization laid down the foundation for looking at Ceedo and its products.

Egenera: New pals for PAN Manager
I’ve spoken about Egenera several times in the past and pointed out that it was one of the very earliest players offering blade computers and the related management software. Egenera called this software PAN (Processing Area Network) manager. PAN manager, at first, was a tool that allowed organizations to orchestrate the use of their stateless, diskless processing blade. It was a tool that accessed proprietary hardware that was part of Egenera’s products.
Last November, Egenera announced that they were setting PAN manager free and allowing it to work with blade computers offered by other suppliers. Since that time, Egenera has announced partnerships with other suppliers of blade computing systems and I expect we’ll hear other announcements in the near future. This, in my view, is a good thing. PAN manager is quite a powerful tool.

Tek-Tools Profiler for VMware
Quite a while ago, I had an interesting conversation with the good folks of Tek-Tools. They’ve been offering management tools for physical environments for a number of years. As their customers used virtual machine software to consolidate multiple workloads onto a small number of physical servers, Tek-Tools looked at that environment to uncover ways their products could help make the lives of their customers (over 800 at this point) better. In February, the company launched the Profiler for VMware, a new module in The Profiler Suite, to optimize capacity utilization, performance, and availability of virtual IT infrastructures. This sounds pretty basic and yet the impact of having these tools could be profound.
