The Old City of Yafo Fortified settlements have existed on the hill of Old Yafo since 1800 BC. This important port city has been under the rule of Egyptians, Canaanites, Jews, Seleucids, Romans, Christian Crusaders, Muslims — and virtually every empire that ever had a major military role in historical Palestine. The size of the once-walled Old City is approximately 0.15 km�. Yafo is one of the most nostalgic sites in the memories of Palestinian refugees. The proximity of downtown Tel Aviv from Old Yafo (only two kilometers to the north) makes the security issues very sensitive in this area, however. The modern suburbs of Yafo (within one kilometer from the Old City) are mostly low-quality housing inhabited by the poorest social classes of Tel Aviv - Yafo. Also the humble port of Yafo hosts mainly small and inexpensive boats, while the wealthier people keep their yachts in the port of Tel Aviv, a few kilometers north of Yafo. More information:
