NPD: November game sales up 15 percent
Industry tracking group shows an expected rebound after October's sales figures were surprisingly flat; 197,000 PS3s, 476,000 Wiis sold in US.
After months of year-over-year growth, October's sales figures surprised some analysts and industry watchers. With the market-depressing effects of a console transition largely behind them, US retailers started off the key fourth quarter of the year with sales more or less in line with what they had taken in for October 2005.
Despite that month's unspectacular showing, analysts were upbeat this week in anticipation of significant sales growth for November. And according to the industry tracking NPD Group, their optimism was justified. For the month of November, US retail game sales amounted to roughly $804 million, a 15 percent increase over the prior year's $702 million.
Sales were led by the Xbox 360 release Gears of War (which broke the million-unit mark), followed by Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii. Twilight Princess was the only game for either of the month's newly released systems--the Wii and the PlayStation 3--to crack the top-10 best-selling games (by units sold).
Despite the performance of Gears of War and the release of Sony's and Nintendo's next-gen consoles, it was portable systems that experienced the more pronounced growth. Portable game sales were up 28 percent to $185 million, compared with home console game sales' 11 percent bump to $618 million.
Sales for PS3 and Wii games would no doubt have been higher if more of the consoles had made their way into gamers' hands. NPD shows 197,000 PS3 systems sold for the month, while the Wii managed to move 476,000 units. The Xbox 360 bested them both, though not by much, sporting sales of 511,000 for the month.
None of the next-gen systems could measure up to the DS, however. Nintendo's newest portable sold 918,000 systems, according to NPD. All tallied up, US retailers sold $771 million worth of gaming hardware last month, 69 percent more than the $456 million moved in November 2005, when the Xbox 360 launched.

Interesting that the two portable systems from Nintendo and Sony have experienced such growth. After being out for nearly two years, these are the two oldest "next-generation" systems, but I'm sure they experienced a bump in sales riding on the backs of their big brothers, the Wii and the PS3.
I find it rather odd that NO PS3 games are on the list at all - you would've expected at least something to make it, but the fact that Nintendogs managed to crack the PS3 says something about the amount of systems Sony made.
I still think it was a blunder by Sony to put in a "Blu-Ray Player" - for the first time in awhile, I think Nintendo got it right.
In the meantime, people are buying the 360 thanks to shortages on both of the other systems (especially the PS3). Parents in line for either one saw the cheap '360 and said, "Hey! I don't have to wait in line for that!"
This is all ending up as an interesting season of sales.
doesnt anyone realize that th NDP doesnt even include walmart, seeing as how big walmart is I would easily say that just aftering walmrt you get much closer to the 600 000 nintendo claimed
The top ten games for november: "Gears of War" (Xbox 360), Microsoft: 1 million units "Final Fantasy XII" (PS2), Square Enix: 896,000 "Legend of Zelda" (Wii), Nintendo: 412,000 "Guitar Hero II" w/guitar (PS2), RedOctane: 356,000 "WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007'' (PS2), THQ: 348,000 "Call of Duty 3" (360), Activision: 333,000 "Madden NFL 07" (PS2), Electronic Arts: 250,000 "Need for Speed Carbon" (PS2), EA: 237,000 "Nintendogs: Dalmations & Friends" (DS), Nintendo: 219,000 "Pokemon Ranger'' (DS), Nintendo: 206,000 Apparently they were not kidding when they said the attach rate for zelda to the wii was high.
yah i'm pretty sure 360 is gonna win this battle and war.
-The Wii and PS3 would have sold more if they were available
-The high 360 sales were probably down to people going in wanting PS3s and Wiis and not being able to get them, and finding a 360 + Gears combination pretty enticing.
-It's unfair to say that the Wii and PS3 did better than the 360 on a day-to-day sales basis. They've just launched avec hype: of course they're going to sell better.
Haha, Zelda only games of the Wii & PS3 to get on the list. Take that crappy PS3!
Don't you know anything about how companies work? The way NPD tracks sales and the way Nintendo tracks sales cant possibly be the exact same way, so of course the figures arent goning to match. Honestly...
Also, it is impossible for any company to know how many systems sell because when they ship systems, they get payed immediately, not when the consoles sell. Therefore Nintendo would have to estimate based on number shipped x average % sold at major retailers.
Since NPD probably gets their figures only from major retailers and not every last little local game store out there, Nintendos "estimate" is probably a lot more accurate than NPD supossed figures.
Nintendo lied. Wouldn't be the first time.
can't wait to read about Nintendo ruling December's sales
Wasn't Nintendo supposed to 'rule' November?
Nintendo's press release said 600,000 Wiis sold in the first 8 days. All those days fell inside November.
NPD statistics 476,000 == Nintendo lied, or NPD are way off.
I just refuse to pay $60 for a video game, no matter how "killer" of an app it is.
Haven't you ever heard of inflation?

So I take it you didn't buy Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time when they first came out?

"Wow, the PS2 still crushing the non-portable competition, amazing! Oh and that's rubbish about Gears, Final Fantasy sold 1.5 million during the first DAY. Looks like since the pre-order sales were on Oct. 31 they technically were in October."
This has already been said before but maybe you missed it, it's hard to say the PS2 crushed the consoles, when the Wii was only available in the last 10 days of the month.
So Wii 10 sold 476,000 in 10 days (Would have sold more if there were more, and in all honesty the system was probably only available on the launch day, followed by probably one other restock day.)
PS2, with 4 weeks of sales, 663,000.

Why are people still buying the GBA when the DS plays all GBA games? I don't get it. Is it just because of how cheap the GBA is now? ------------------
That's exactly it. The GBA has a huge library of fun, inexpensive games. And with the popularity of the DS, you can get GBA's and SP's for less than ever now. It's a great value for the investment and anyone who wasn't on the GBA bandwagon before can hop on now for very little money.

Final fantasy has sold more, but some of the sales were from pre-orders in october, so they are not reflected in this chart. I think overall, Final Fantasy is a little bit ahead.
Cmontyx49, Which numbers are you looking at? Gears outsold FFXII this month.
Even though FFXII sold more than gears, It is amazing that a new property (not a sequal) sold so well. I can't remember any new gamse that sold so fast. F.E.A.R. is the only recent one that wasn't a franchise. Maybe Dead Rising, but it was trumped
"meimnobody---So the wii utterly crushed the xbox 360 if it would have had the same period of reporting. 70,000 units a day. Nintendo out of 3.9 million units of hardware bought in the US for the month of November sold more then 2.1 million units of it. "
But of course you realize that after the first million, the sales would have slowed, right? Considering that the 360 has been out for a year, I find it amazing that it beat the Wii, but you can't reverse that because the Wii is the console that launched. I guarantee that the Wii would have beat the 360 if more hardware was available, but for a true comparison you need to compare the numbers of the Wii next November, once it is in full availability. I bet it won't meet the 500,000 mark in November of next year.
I figured November would be good for FFXII. It's important for people to remember that the game was only available for one day in October.

That PS2 is still a beast. Funny how Gamespot doesn't mention it, but again its a Cnet publication so it is for the lowest common denominator.
Wow! Way to go Nintendo and Microsoft selling almost 1 million units combined. And almost a million DS units!?! That's awesome!
What about $50...would you pay $50 for a new game....You can pick up Dynasty Warriors 5 real cheap....or Ridge Racer...lol The new price point for first party and AAA titles is $59.99... There's no dancing around it.. Gears of War will probably drop in the Summer.... So till then I guess you can play PGR3...Have fun
I helped those November numbers by purchasing a Wii. I already own a 360, but probably will not get Gears of War until it's less than $30. I just refuse to pay $60 for a video game, no matter how "killer" of an app it is.
Current sales numbers on PS3 and Wii don't mean as much as they will after the launch window since the current sales (especially PS3 because of the price) could just be the fanatics... I'm especially curious to see if the Wii numbers will remain as strong as they look. If so the race might be between 360 and Wii instead of 360 and PS3 like everyone thought...
1 . NDS = 918000
2 . PS2 = 664000
3 . GBA = 641000
4 . x360 = 511000
5 . Wii = 476000
6 . PSP = 412000
7 . PS3 = 197000
You have to wonder how many Wii's would have sold if there had been a million of them available? 360 is on track to meet the 10 million goal
Digital-Hero, you know nothing, the Wii came out in Australia a day before Europe, we also get European made games before the US. $170 million video game industry in the country shows that it is the fastest growing market in the world.
And with Chrismas on full approach this figure is set to rise again
Good news! I hope the video game market continues to kick ass! Keep that number up! I know that video game market analyists are starting to think cheap crappy mobile games are the way to go...because they are cheap to make and sell well...but they are not the epic games that gears of war are!! Go game industry!
Over 642,000 of the GBA line were sold in that NPD reporting period. Btw the wii was only seven days of the reporting period but sold nearly half a million.
So the wii utterly crushed the xbox 360 if it would have had the same period of reporting. 70,000 units a day. Nintendo out of 3.9 million units of hardware bought in the US for the month of November sold more then 2.1 million units of it.

Well this is just perfect. Looking at the Wii and PS3 difference. After Christmas there are going to be even a larger distance of units sold between the Wii and PS3... Great...
Hey Im sorry I know I miss up, But Blue Dragon did sold out in Japan. They didnt made 200,000 copies yea but they will. Just go to www.onthexbox.com and go see to your self.
Considering the fact that there aren't even 200,000 X360s sold in Japan, I'm gonna have to with "Fly-Boy's a raving lunatic for $500," please.
It might be sold 200,000 dollars copies sold or more.
It might be a Blue Dragon2.
I know I kind of miss up of my 3rd comment.
