UTB/TSC Bond Election Information
En espaol

Voters in the Texas Southmost College taxing district will make a decision November 2, 2004, on a bond package for The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.  Here is some information to help you make your decision.

Why Are the Bonds on the Ballot?
Our mission requires us to offer accessible, affordable, high-quality college education in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. But an increasing shortage of classrooms, parking, and other facilities discourages students from enrolling in classes they need and prevents UTB/TSC from meeting the needs of one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States. These bonds will pay for new facilities to help us keep up.

What Will the Bonds Pay For?
1.  Classrooms and Parking
Four new classroom buildings and parking to prepare for an expected growth of new students. This fall, there are almost 1,000 new students at UTB/TSC, which is one of the most crowded public institutions in the state, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. There is one parking space for every four students. ($28 million*)

2.  New Library
Doubling the size of the library. The present library is too small for our current and future enrollment, according to American Library Association standards. ($14 million*)

3.  Workforce Training Classrooms
Classrooms to train students in skills for better paying jobs in business and industry. ($17 million*)

4.  Center for Early Childhood Studies
A center to create master teachers where future teachers study and understand how children learn and develop where current teachers learn how to improve their teaching, and where children can be cared for with state-of-the-art instruction. ($4 million*)

5.  Center for Alzheimers, Diabetes, Cancer, and Heart Disease
A center to study and provide health counseling on Alzheimers, diabetes, cancer and heart disease, the most prevalent diseases affecting the people of the Rio Grande Valley. ($5 million*)

How Much Will It Cost?
For the homeowner whose home is valued at about $54,000, the bonds would cost approximately $1.75 per month, or about $21 a year, based on the total bond package amount of $68 million.  If you are 65 or older or if you are disabled, you would not pay additional taxes to the Texas Southmost College District. Your tax rate would be frozen at its current level.

I Have More Questions!
We will hold numerous meetings throughout the community and on the UTB/TSC campus between now and Election Day on Nov. 2 to answer your questions about the bond package. The dates, times and locations will be advertised in area newspapers and media, as well as on this website. If you have questions, you may call the TSC District Office at (956) 548-6567, and well be happy to talk with you.
