Private Network

Private Network

A private and flexible connection between your instances.

Why choose OVHcloud Private Network?

Extended networks between regions

The Private Network is managed by OVHcloud vRack technology, giving you the option to extend private networks between multiple data centers located across the globe. This way, you can connect instances across different regions through a private communication channel.

Insulation

You can create up to 4,000 level 2 private networks. In concrete terms, launching a Private Network implements a new VLAN, and its communications are only accessible to the resources that are connected to it. This isolation can be used to segment control plane and data plane networks, for example.

Extension to other OVHcloud services

You can also use the vRack to connect different OVHcloud services to one another. You can extend your Public Cloud Private Network to connect with your Private Cloud or dedicated servers, for example. This way, you can distribute your application to suit your needs and keep the channel private.

Examples of use cases

profitable OVHcloud

Disaster recovery planning (DRP) in a different location

The Public Cloud is available in several data centers. By setting up a disaster recovery plan, your services will benefit from a private network’s capacity to expand to other regions. This way, you can sync your data via a secure channel to organize a simple, efficient DRP.

Terraform deployment industrialization

Terraform’s OpenStack driver is used to manage the Public Cloud Private Networks. If you are looking to deploy complex infrastructures that are difficult to industrialize, you can use this Infrastructure-as-Code tool to manage resources like networks, subnets, and ports.

flexible OVHcloud

Load balancing between locations

A distributed application can be deployed across multiple locations, without sacrificing the security and reliability of collaborative communications between nodes. Data from the same application or cluster can move from one location to another, with quick response times and full isolation.

Your questions answered

How many private networks can I create?

The technical limit is set at 4,000 private networks, but you may find that there is a quota limit for your project. You can request a quota increase via the OVHcloud Control Panel.

Can I manage addressing manually, or any way other than DHCP?

If you want to manage addressing differently, you can do this as you would with any other layer 2 network.

Can I connect my Public Cloud instances to the same private network as my dedicated server or Hosted Private Cloud?

Yes, OVHcloud’s private networks within OVHcloud regions are managed by our vRack technology, which allows private networks to be extended across different services by linking the same vRack to each solution. Please note that OVHcloud Local Zones do not currently support vRack.

Can I connect two instances in different regions via a Private Network?

Yes. Once your project is linked to a vRack, all active US regions will be able to communicate with each other. Simply use the same VLAN number when creating private networks in each region.

By default, do instances automatically configure the address provided by DHCP?

Standard system images generally offer automatic configuration by DHCP on the instance’s first network interface. To configure additional interfaces, you will need, for example, to add them to the instance’s startup script.
