2026 ICF Coaching Futures Report

Envisioning Coaching's Next Horizon

This report does not predict a single future. Instead, it explores multiple scenarios shaping access to coaching worldwide. Grounded in global insights, foresight methods, and creative storytelling, we invite you to imagine what coaching could become and how today’s actions influence what comes next.

The future is not fixed. Help shape it.

I have a feeling that

mentoring and supervision for human coaches will still be viable at least in the next 5 years but I am concerned if these 2 aspects of reflective work of a coach will also be replaced by AI. In the mentoring space, I note that the use of tools such as Raenotes can pick up coaching competencies in an audio recording with about 60% accuracy. ChatGPT, Claude, etc. can engage in intellectual discussions on issues faced by a coach and provide almost similar support as a human mentor and supervisor.

I wonder if

coaches could start using VR for things like leadership simulations or team-building exercises? I read about a tech company in Singapore using VR to train employees. It feels like this could bring a new level of immersion to coaching, especially for skill development.

I have a feeling that

‘coaching’ will be not just a competitive advantage but an essential life skill (that will need to be taught and learnt consciously) in the years to come. Fundamental to building connections and relationship – listening, presence, building trust and psychological safety – will take center stage among the skills needed to thrive at work and in life. Creative Thinking, what we call coaching mindset – open, non-judgmental, curious and flexible mindset will be a differentiator in an AI-led world.

I have a feeling that

the future of coaching will call us back to deep, soulful human connection — the only force that truly moves us as social beings. We’re drifting away, chasing things, titles, and status symbols, becoming emptier inside, and as we lose connection with ourselves, we also lose depth in how we treat others. In business, this shows up as serious talent, retention, and engagement challenges. Coaching must restore dignity, ethics, and authentic human warmth everywhere.

I wonder if

lawsuits across the United States against Life Coaches like that one in Utah could push the industry toward regulation. It feels like coaches working in areas close to healthcare (like ADHD or wellness coaching) might end up needing licenses, like therapists
