5. Information Automatically Collected
A. Usage Information
We collect certain information automatically when you visit the Services (“Usage Information”), including:
• Your browser type and operating system;
• Your Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is the number automatically assigned to your computer whenever you access the Internet and that can sometimes be used to derive your general geographic area;
• Transaction data on items you purchase on our site or through our partners;
• Other unique identifiers, including mobile device identification numbers;
• Sites or mobile apps you used before and after using the Services;
• Pages you view and links you click on within the Services;
• Information collected through cookies, web beacons, and other technologies;
• Information about your interactions with e-mail messages, such as the links clicked on and whether the messages were opened or forwarded; and
• Standard Server Log Information.
We may use cookies, pixel tags, and other technologies to automatically collect Usage Information:
o Cookies and Pixel Tags
Cookies are bits of information that are stored by your computer’s web browser. You can decide if and how your computer will accept a cookie by configuring your preferences or options in your browser. However, if you choose to reject cookies, you may not be able to use certain online products, services or features on the Services.
Pixel tags are very small images or small pieces of data embedded in images, also known as “web beacons” or “clear GIFs,” that can recognize cookies, the time and date a page is viewed, a description of the page where the pixel tag is placed, and similar information from your computer or device.
o Embedded Scripts
An embedded script is programming code designed to collect information about your interactions with the Services. It is temporarily downloaded onto your device from our web server or a third party with whom we work, is active only while you are connected to the Services, and deleted or deactivated thereafter.
o Location-identifying Technologies
GPS (global positioning systems) software, geo-filtering, and other location-aware technologies locate (sometimes precisely) you for purposes such as verifying your location, understanding the geographic distribution of our users, and delivering or restricting relevant content based on your location.
o Device Fingerprinting
Device fingerprinting is the process of analyzing and combining sets of information elements from your device’s browser, such as JavaScript objects and installed fonts, in order to create a “fingerprint” of your device and uniquely identify your device and applications.
o In-App Tracking Methods
There are a variety of tracking technologies that may be included in mobile applications, and these are not browser-based like cookies and cannot be controlled by browser settings. Some use device identifier, or other identifiers such as “Ad IDs” to associate app user activity to a particular app and to track user activity across apps. You can stop all collection of information via our mobile applications by uninstalling them. Also, you may be able to exercise specific privacy choices, such as enabling or disabling certain location-based services, by adjusting the permissions in your mobile device and/or Slate’s iOS or Android mobile applications.
For further information on tracking technologies and your choices regarding them, please see Section 6 below.
B. Tracking Technologoes
o Analytics and Advertising Tracking Technologies.
We allow outside entities to place and read their own cookies, web beacons, and other technologies to collect information through the Services. For example, our vendors may use these technologies to collect information (i) that helps us with traffic measurement, research, and analytics, and (ii) that is used to serve advertisements on our Services and across the Internet and on other apps tailored to your apparent interests. To the extent we combine information from outside services with Personal Information we collect directly from you on the Services, we will treat the combined information as Personal Information under this Privacy Policy. Otherwise, the information collected and stored by outside entities remains subject to their policies and practices, including whether they continue to share information with us, the types of information shared, and your choices on what is visible to others on third party services.
We use various analytics services that may use cookies or other tracking technologies to help us analyze how users interact with and use the website, compile reports on the website’s activity, and provide other services related to website activity and usage. These technologies may collect information such as your IP address, time of visit, whether you are a return visitor, and any referring website. The information generated by these providers will be transmitted to and stored by them and will be subject to their privacy policies. For a full list of third party partners with links to their privacy policies and opt-out options, including analytics services, see our Third Party Partners page.
You may choose whether to receive interest-based advertising by submitting opt-outs. Some of the advertisers and service providers that perform advertising-related services for us and our partners may participate in the Digital Advertising Alliance (“DAA”) Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising. To learn more about how you can exercise certain choices regarding Interest-based Advertising, visit http://www.aboutads.info/choices, and http://www.aboutads.info/appchoices for information on the DAA’s opt-out program for mobile apps. Some of these companies may also be members of the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”). To learn more about the NAI and your opt-out options for their members, see http://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/. You can also opt out of interest-based advertising within mobile apps based on advertising identifiers on your device (for example, through cross-app tracking). See the Advertising and Privacy options under your device’s Settings for more information. Please be aware that, even if you are able to opt out of certain kinds of interest-based advertising, you may continue to receive other types of ads. Opting out only means that those selected members should no longer deliver certain interest-based advertising to you, but does not mean you will no longer receive any targeted content and/or ads (e.g., from other ad networks). Slate is not responsible for effectiveness of, or compliance with, any third-parties’ opt-out options or programs or the accuracy of their statements regarding their programs.
C. Choices About How We Use and Disclose Your Information and Do Not Track Disclosures.
Some web browsers may transmit signals such as “do-not-track” (DNT) or Global Privacy Control (GPC) to the websites with which the user communicates. Because of differences in how web browsers incorporate and activate this feature, it is not always clear (especially with DNT), whether users intend for these signals to be transmitted, or whether they even are aware of them. Slate will endeavor to take action in response to these signals.
Globally, Slate will interpret the browser “do-not-track” and GPC signals as an opt-out signal of the Sale or Sharing of Personal Information to the US Privacy API. For more information on “do-not-track” and Global Privacy Control, visit http://www.allaboutdnt.com and https://globalprivacycontrol.org/.
6. User Generated Postings
The Site may provide you the opportunity to participate and post content publicly on blogs, as reviews, through interactive features and through other communication functionality on the site (“User Generated Postings”) or through third-party social media services as described separately below. You may choose, through such features or otherwise, to submit or post questions, comments, or other content. Such User Generated Content, as well as User Submitted Materials described above, may be displayed publicly along with certain of your Personal Information, such as your name or a screen name. Please note that your use of User Generated Postings is subject to our Terms of Use (www.slate.com/terms).
Note that any User Generated Postings that you make are public – others will have access to your User Submitted Materials and may use it or share it with third parties. If you choose to voluntarily disclose Personal Information in your User Submitted Materials, that information will be considered public information and the protections of this Privacy Statement will not apply.
7. Social Networking Services
Slate has worked with certain social media providers to offer you their social networking services through our Services. For example, you can use social networking services, including but not limited to Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and others to share information about your experience on our Services with your friends and followers on those social networking services. These social networking services may be able to collect information about you, including your activity on our Services. These social networking services also may notify your friends, both on our Services and on the social networking services themselves, that you are a user of our Services or about your use of our Services, in accordance with applicable law and their own privacy policies. If you choose to access or make use of social networking services, we may receive information about you that you have made available to those social networking services, including information about your contacts on those social networking services.
You also may be able to link an account from a social networking service (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) to an account through our Services. This may allow you to use your credentials from the other site or service to sign in to certain features on our Services. If you link your account from an outside site or service, we will collect information from those accounts, and any information that we collect will be governed by this Privacy Policy. If you choose to register via a social media service, or to later link your account on our Site to your account with a social media service, we will use Personal Information you have provided to the social media service (such as your name, email address, gender and other information you make publicly available via the social media service) to create your account. Note that the information we collect from and through a social media service may depend on the privacy settings you have with the social media service, that site’s terms of service, and the permissions you grant to us in connection with linking your account with the Site to your account with a social media service. Other than what we may share with the social media service as described below, the Personal Information a social media service has about you is obtained by the social media service independent of our Site, and Slate is not responsible for it.
8. Links to Other Sites and Services
The Services contain links to other websites or online services that are operated and maintained by outside entities and that are not under the control of or maintained by Slate. Such links do not constitute an endorsement by Slate of those other websites, the content displayed therein, or the persons or entities associated therewith. This Privacy Policy does not apply to this outside content. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of other websites or services.

You may opt out of receiving certain promotional communications from us at any time by (i) for promotional emails, by clicking on the opt-out or “unsubscribe” link included in the commercial e-mails you receive”. Please note that your opt-out is limited to the e-mail address or phone number used and will not affect subsequent subscriptions. Please note that the Services are directed toward users who reside in the United States. By using the Services, you consent to the collection, storage, processing, and transfer of your information in and to the United States, or other countries and territories, pursuant to the laws of the United States, where permitted by law.
