Trails Are Open in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Ranger District – 2/26/2026 Great news! Trails are open, and the canyon is looking beautiful after the recent weather. Expect a few muddy puddles in lower areas, and please note that both Carson's Crossing and the PQ Creek Park Crossing remain flooded. Over in Carmel Mountain and Del Mar Mesa Preserves, the vernal pools are full and thriving. These habitats are extremely sensitive right now—please stay on designated trails to help protect this unique growing environment. As you explore, keep an eye out… native wildflowers are beginning to pop! You might spot early blooms adding color along the trail. Enjoy the fresh air, tread lightly, and let nature do her thing.

The City is seeking an operator to lease the Tecolote Canyon Golf Course, a beloved, well-established golf course with endless potential. The selected operator will renovate, rehabilitate and maintain the 18-hole golf course, driving range and clubhouse. The course is currently closed due to a major sewer line project, but will reopen once that project concludes and the City Council approves a new lease for the selected operator. City crews are working on repairs to a water main that broke near the intersection of Youngstown Way and Carrol Canyon Road in Sorrento Valley. The eastbound lanes of Carrol Canyon Road are closed between Youngstown Way and Nancy Ridge. Detours are in place. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, if possible. There are currently no impacts to water customers.

Work to repair the City of San Diego’s Chollas Operations Yard employee parking lot on Caminito Chollas in Oak Park is now complete, and the lot has reopened. The temporary vehicle and bike lane closures on College Grove Drive have been removed, and the roadway has been restored to its pre-project layout, which includes two vehicle lanes, a buffered bike lane in both directions, and parallel parking on the north side of the street. We appreciate the community’s patience during this work. #SanDiegoAtWork

LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE OPEN SPACE

TRAILS CLOSED - Los Peñasquitos Canyon Ranger District - 2/16/26 The storm has arrived and the trails in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Ranger District, including Los Peñasquitos Canyon, Del Mar Mesa and Carmel Mountain Preserves are closed. With nearly an inch of rain expected for today, nearly half an inch tomorrow and potentially a quarter inch Wednesday, our little creek will be a torrential river. Trails in canyons and low areas will likely be submerged in a swift current carrying debris and at least a couple of our bridges. This storm is also projected to have high winds. Combined with saturated soils and long-term stressors, there’s a high chance for treefalls in our preserves. After the immediate flood and wind dangers pass, unsafe trail conditions will probably extend well beyond the end of the storm system. Rangers will continue to conduct safety assessments and update you as conditions change. Trails in higher areas, like our mesa top preserves, are closed, too, as use when wet not only damages the trails, but also the adjacent habitat. The vernal pools will be refilled by these rains, so while uplands tend to dry out faster than lowlands, that does not apply to the mesa top trails. They are likely to stay closed longer to allow the vernal pools and their watersheds time to recede by evaporation. Thank you for respecting our trails and habitats. Stay cozy and enjoy the rain! (M. Construction on a major sewer line in Tecolote Canyon is expanding. Work on the 4.7-mile section of pipeline has moved into most of Tecolote Canyon Golf Course, and all 18 holes are now closed. The driving range will remain open until Sunday, Feb. 15. Previously, work was only partially impacting course operations, and it was open under a 9-hole layout. In addition, the lease with the course's previous operator has expired, and the construction impacts give the City the opportunity to revisit the management of this asset, improve operations, better align with market value and enhance long-term revenue and public benefit. To that end, the City intends to request proposals and enter into lease negotiations, with any proposed agreement to be brought forward for City Council consideration and approval. The course is planned to reopen upon the conclusion of the infrastructure project, which is scheduled for this summer, and after an operator is selected and a new lease is approved by the City Council.
