Why is collaboration amongst CSR funders limited? Aditya Natraj (CEO, Piramal Foundation) believes the reason is - deep specialization needs to precede collaboration. Only when a funder has deep domain knowledge in any sector (water, forests, edtech, tribal communities ...) built up over many years, will other funders value it and want to collaborate, because there is no way they can invest that much time on their own. He talks about the expertise that Tata Steel Foundation and Tata Consultancy Services CSR have built over decades, which he has tapped into. He also uses the auto manufacturing example to illustrate the point that deep specialization benefits the whole system, as well as individual components of the system. #dusspokeindiainc 2025 is here, and Aditya is our first featured leader of the year. “Why Government-Run Accreditation Models Like NAAC Are Not Sustainable” In India, we have 1.6 million educational institutions. Expecting one central authority to control and manage quality at this scale is unrealistic. Here’s why government-led accreditation doesn’t work: 1️⃣ Scale – The numbers are simply too big. 2️⃣ Bureaucracy – Slow and rigid, not built for today’s pace. 3️⃣ Corruption & Bias – Favours and influence weaken credibility. 4️⃣ Lack of Agility – For govt bodies, accreditation is just another file. 5️⃣ No Competition – Globally, independent private agencies compete—competition makes the system better. 👉 In the US, accreditation is carried out by independent private agencies, only recognized by the government. 👉 In the EU, independent agencies aligned with ENQA standards drive quality, not governments themselves. India doesn’t need more centralization. It needs independent, system-driven, tech-enabled accreditation. Why Are Teachers Walking Away from Classrooms? Recently, I read Prof. Krishna Kumar’s column, the director of NCERT and honestly, it didn’t feel like an article. It felt like a cry we’ve all been ignoring for far too long. Not because of money. They’re leaving because the soul of teaching is being drained. Teacher’s day doesn't begin with their student’s face, it begins with paperwork. Attendance logs, data sheets, lesson plans, compliance reports, it’s endless. The joy of teaching gets buried under bureaucracy. A teacher corrects a student, and the parent threatens to “complain.” A student fails a test, and the teacher becomes the villain. How do you teach values when the system itself forgets to value you? In India: 📌 Over 1.2 million teaching positions in India lie vacant. 📌 40% of teachers spend more time filling forms than teaching. 📌 Many say they’re not tired of teaching, they’re tired of being treated like they do not matter! I remember a teacher once telling me, "Ab class mein padhane se zyada, form bharne padte hain." That line has stayed with me ever since. The solution? Not just higher salaries. Not more training sessions. But trust. Autonomy. Empathy. Let educators do what they do best, teach. Let them question, experiment, and inspire again. Because when we value teachers, we value our future. When asked about the state of the India startup market, I sum it up concisely: - The funding winter is behind us, with green shoots flourishing, signaling the arrival of Spring. - Funding is now more concentrated, favoring startups with sound economics and mature founders for subsequent rounds. - First-time raises are decreasing, accompanied by smaller cheque sizes. - Valuation euphoria has subsided, with a shift towards a more grounded approach influenced by collective wisdom. These dynamics are fostering a favorable environment for #VentureDebt, particularly gaining traction among SaaS startups with low churn rates and defined revenue. Venture debt is increasingly recognized as an effective tool in India, enabling startups to expand round sizes, extend runways, manage dilution impacts, and optimize #CostofCapital (WACC).
