Indian hospitals have long faced challenges in modernizing their digital infrastructure. Many continue to operate on legacy IT systems with siloed datasets, creating significant barriers to integrating BI tools and achieving interoperability across hospital systems, insurers, and national platforms such as ABDM. A major hurdle remains capability building and IT upskilling, with clinicians often resistant due to concerns about additional documentation burdens. This is compounded by a shortage of trained health informatics professionals and data scientists who can harness the vast volumes of healthcare data. Concerns around cybersecurity and patient data privacy further slow the pace of adoption. Encouragingly, hospitals are now expected to increase IT innovation budgets by 20–25% over the next 2–3 years, with greater emphasis on digital transformation. Key investment priorities will include IT capability building, BI tools, data lakes, and the growing use of AI in documentation, decision support, and imaging. One Nation, One Healthtech Stack: The Future of Digital Healthcare in India India is at the cusp of a groundbreaking shift in healthcare delivery. Thanks to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, we now have over 73 crore ABHA IDs issued—enabling citizens to securely store and transmit their health data. Additionally, more than 5 lakh healthcare professionals are onboard, reinforcing trust and credibility in digital health platforms. But it’s not enough to just digitise records; we must create an interoperable healthtech stack that connects every node of the healthcare ecosystem—clinics, labs, hospitals, and telehealth platforms. Imagine seamless access to a patient’s medical history, diagnostics, and prescriptions, no matter where they receive care. Initiatives like the Unified Health Interface (UHI), which draws from the principles of UPI, are designed to bridge this digital divide, enabling frictionless integration of services across providers. This unified infrastructure promises better diagnosis, improved transparency, and stronger continuity of care. India has already set global benchmarks with digital infrastructure—from Aadhaar to UPI and CoWIN. You can’t turn a corner in healthcare today without discussions around #AI and it’s role in affordability and accessibility with patient centricity. In #India the land of tech innovations, AI is on everyone’s mind, strategy and ofcourse delivery. Globally being already a trillion dollar generating platform, by far the biggest benefits in AI have been seen in #healthcare and #lifescienecs It was a pleasure to participate in a recent panel hosted by CNBC-TV18 on the theme “Technology as an Enabler in Healthcare Innovation.” The discussion focused on how AI, data science, and digital platforms are accelerating progress across the healthcare value chain, from early diagnosis and treatment to accessibility and cost efficiency. Alongside my fellow panellists Indu Bhushan , Prashant Warier, @Satish Kannan and Harish Gudi we explored how technology is enabling scalable and transferable healthcare solutions across geographies. I was honoured to speak at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2025 (New Delhi) on “Scaling Access to AI-Powered Diagnostics for Improved Health Equity with a focus on practical implementation, challenges, and real-world impact.” What I shared on stage : -The MedMitra origin story We started with one nagging observation: brilliant doctors were losing hours each day to clerical work. MedMitra’s AI now does the heavy lifting—instantly summarising patient histories, transcribing consultations, and suggesting evidence-backed differentials and treatment plans. Doctors reclaim their focus; patients get faster, clearer answers. -When no doctor is around. In primary-health centres without specialists, our triage agent and WhatsApp-based lab-report interpreter flag red-alerts and route them to remote experts. AI becomes the first line of defence, not a luxury add-on. Pilot vs. real world. Pilot sites showed a 40 % cut in OPD/IPD time and 97 % accuracy in AI insights. Fast-forward to full roll-outs across hospitals, and we’re holding steady at 38–42 % time savings and 95–98 % accuracy—even with power outages, patchy data, and the glorious unpredictability of real life. Roadblocks & fixes. Interoperability headaches? We wrote feather-weight FHIR adapters so legacy HIMS systems could talk to us without ripping anything out. Clinician scepticism? Every AI suggestion comes with a “why,” not just a score, so trust climbs rapidly. Rural bandwidth? We built an edge-deployable pack that syncs data when signal returns—AI shouldn’t vanish when 4G does. Aligning NABH with Patient Outcomes & Business Analytics: A Strategic Imperative In the Indian healthcare landscape, NABH is often seen as a compliance checkbox. But for those of us who’ve lived and led its transformation, NABH is a powerful framework to drive clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and strategic decision-making. Having successfully led NABH, NABL, and DNB accreditations at institutions like Asha Hospital, Kamptee, Nagpur, I’ve strategically aligned NABH standards with measurable improvements in both patient outcomes and business performance. Here’s how I’ve done it — not in theory, but in real-world hospital environments: 🔹 1. Linking Quality Indicators (QIs) to Performance Dashboards At Asha Hospital, I implemented a live QI dashboard tied to NABH KPIs (medication errors, patient falls, infection rates). Impact: Enabled unit-wise accountability Reduced hospital-acquired infections by 32% within 9 months Used these analytics to train specific departments and track improvement 🔹 2. Integrating PREMs and PROMs into NABH Chapter 5 (CQI) Patient feedback often ends up as a paper trail. I revamped this by introducing structured PREM/PROM tools into our CQI framework. Impact: Patient satisfaction scores improved by 22% Data was analyzed monthly and discussed in leadership rounds Actionable insights were linked directly to care pathways and discharge planning 🔹 3. Business Analytics from Non-Conformities Instead of treating NABH non-conformities as audit-day stress points, I led monthly root cause reviews converting them into predictive insights. Impact: Identified recurring gaps in diagnostics TAT Optimized pathologist review timelines, improving clinician satisfaction Helped management take timely manpower and equipment decisions 🔹 4. Turnaround Strategy through Accreditation Readiness I’ve used NABH not just for quality, but as a hospital turnaround tool. Impact: Revamped SOPs, HR policies, and biomedical tracking in under 100 days Made departments audit-ready, increased trust with insurers and empanelments Enhanced our appeal to DNB programs, successfully acquiring DNB Anaesthesia and DNB Medicine accreditation ✅ My belief is simple: Accreditation should not be about passing audits — it should be about building resilient, data-driven healthcare institutions where patient outcomes and business outcomes go hand in hand. Yet, in India, poor patient adherence—linked to unclear or rushed consent—costs healthcare providers over ₹12,000 crore each year in avoidable complications and readmissions. What Makes Consent Truly “Informed”? > Capacity: The patient must be able to understand and make decisions about their care. > Clear Information: They need full details on treatments, risks, benefits, and alternatives. > Voluntary Choice: Their decision should be free from pressure or coercion. The Business Case for Better Consent > Reduced Risk: Strong consent processes cut litigation by 27% and improve patient satisfaction by 18% (AIIMS data). > Faster Claims: Proper documentation speeds up insurance processing. > Reputation Boost: Trustworthy hospitals attract more patients and medical tourists. However, there are challenges unique to India : > Hierarchical Doctor-Patient Relationships: Many patients hesitate to ask questions. > Family Influence: Decisions are often made by families, not just the patient. > Low Health Literacy: Many struggle to understand medical jargon. The main thing I want to say is that "informed consent" isn’t just a legal checkbox, but a way to build trust, improve outcomes, and stand out as a patient-first healthcare provider. By focusing on clear communication (like we do at NirogGyan | Smart Reports for Patients), voluntary choice, and thorough documentation, hospitals can make a real difference in patients’ lives, and their own success.
