Solved a challenging #WooCommerce issue today where guest users were unable to add products to the cart. What I tried at first: • Cleared WooCommerce customer sessions • Cleared expired transients • Flushed cache and temporarily disabled cache related plugins • Enabled WP_DEBUG hoping to see some error messages but nothing was printed into error_log Here's some more context and how I tackled the problem with further error logging. The Problem: Session cookies were being created correctly, but WooCommerce wasn't saving session data to the database. The woocommerce_sessions table remained empty, causing cart items to disappear immediately. The Root Cause: The woocommerce_set_cart_cookies hook was being triggered with a false flag, preventing automatic session persistence for guest users. The Fix: Force session saves for guests by hooking into woocommerce_set_cart_cookies and manually calling save_data() when needed. Simple one-function solution that resolved the issue completely. Debugging tip: Enable WP_DEBUG logging and hook into multiple WooCommerce actions to trace exactly when sessions are (or aren't) being saved. The logs revealed the exact moment the save was failing. I must admit that this has become my go-to solution for challenging issues like this. Especially when there are no obvious errors in the error_log. (Save this + tag a PPC friend who need this ♻️) First of all: ◾ I don’t hide this info ◾ Sharing this not kill my business ◾ Everyone win when tracking work good Now let’s fix your GA4 👇 🔄 Events (Heart of GA4) If you only track scroll, click, pageview, that’s useless. No value, no money insight. Track what connect to money: ▫️ add_to_cart ▫️ begin_checkout ▫️ purchase ▫️ form_submit ▫️ login_success You run biz, not blog. So track like that. 🔄 Parameters (Full story) Event only tell half story. You track purchase? Good. But no info like coupon, shipping, payment type? That bad. Without params, you see “what happen” but never “why”. Fix this. Add params. Always. 🔄 Conversions (The Business Goal) Most people mark everything as conversion. Form start? Scroll? Click? No! Only mark what bring money. Lead submit, purchase, complete signup. Keep clean. More clean = more accurate bidding. 🔄 Debug Mode (The Lie Detector) Just because tag fire in GTM, doesn’t mean data go to GA4. Use GTM + GA4 DebugView, Check: event name, param names, values, trigger. If anything break here, fix before live. Don’t guess. Debug. 🔄 Reports (The Storytelling) GA4 default reports are weak. No business story, only numbers. Build your own: • Funnel • Path • Segment • Table Explore tab | best tool in GA4. If you don’t use it, you miss 80%. 🔄 BigQuery (The Power Tool) GA4 have limits. Sampling, missing data, threshold. BigQuery = full data, raw data. Join with Shopify, Stripe, anything. You serious? Use BigQuery. 🔄 Consent Mode (Real world problem) Not everyone give cookie. You lose 40%+ of users if no Consent Mode v2. Use it. With server-side GTM, still track modeled conversion. No cookie ≠ no tracking. You read all? Credibility boost – “Trusted by 1,200 families in [city].” When we tested these against generic ads, CPL dropped by 30–40, and site visits doubled without increasing spend. This post is not for soft-hearted folks.... Starting a D2C brand doesn't mean slapping offers on anything. This is an amazing space to experiment with different price points and different shipping tiers. This also give you a leverage to test what AOV band works the best for you. Free shipping and discounts need math; both for top line and bottom line. I was discussing this with a founder the other day and here was their problem statement: "Should I provide a 10% discount at $75 and free shipping for orders above $99?" (Earlier, the free shipping was at $49 and they were clearly losing money on every small order.) Sounds pretty simple, right? But it is not that easy. Let us see some of their basic metrics: COGS (%) = 30% (blended) CAC = $35 (assumed to be constant, blended) Standard Shipping Cost = $7 (fixed) Aspired Profit Margin > 20% Orders below $100 >= 45% (~33% of total orders below $75) Goal: To move users to higher price band of > $75 to improve margins. My instant response to that was, "you are still going to lose money on shipping, we should break it down and test it." My take? With so much demand under $100, a $99 ship threshold adds friction where most buyers are sitting and 10% off at $75 erodes margin without lifting AOV enough. With so little difference in discount and free shipping thresholds, as a customer, I have no motivation to go till $100 to make a purchase. Plus, I already cover the shipping discounts if my product price is around $90 as I get $9 discount while the shipping is $7 (in fact I get $2 additional for my order). Here's what the calculations say if we test Scenario 2 in the image: • Mid-AOV margins improve (e.g., $75: 18.79% → 19.33%, $90: 26.14% → 27.78%). • More carts cross the $75 tier, while the discount at $100 nudges AOV up and protects margin. • High-AOV orders stay healthy; low-AOV isn’t subsidized. We have just started the experiment to see what happens when environmental factors weigh in. We will run both the options for 2 weeks each to see which is the best. It will help us answer, "Do users prefer free shipping over a flat 10% discount? What makes the most money?" This is experimentation in action. So, if anyone tells you, CRO is just changing button colors and tweaking UI. You need to get away from them as soon as possible. They are the bad man, your parents warned you about. How I Collect International Payments (USD, AED → INR) The world is changing and so are opportunities for freelancers and agencies. With the U.S. making H1B visas more expensive, companies are hiring remote talent abroad instead. That means a massive opportunity for Indian freelancers to work with international clients without leaving home. But there’s a catch: Landing clients is one thing. Getting paid by them is another. Over time, I’ve tested multiple ways to collect international payments. Here’s what I learned: 1. Bank Transfer (SWIFT via Kotak Mahindra) Looks professional, but it’s slow and full of hidden losses. For a $500 payment, I got ₹43,500 instead of ₹44,368 because of weak exchange rates. 2. PayPal Easy to use, but brutal on fees. 5% + $0.30 fee, plus currency conversion markup and GST. I lost 7–10% of every payment and waited 2–3 days for settlement. 3. Skydo Charges a flat $19 + GST up to $2,000. Good for large invoices, not small ones. Live FX rate is a plus, but still not ideal for frequent transfers. 4. Crypto (USDT) On paper, almost zero fees. In practice, too risky. Clients rarely understand it, and conversion to INR is a hassle. 5. XFlow This is what I use now. Flat 1% fee or $8 per transaction. True mid-market rate, no hidden charges, next-day settlement to Indian bank accounts. Clients can pay via Fedwire or ACH without signing up, and e-FIRA compliance is auto-handled.
